A blocked toilet can seem like an emergency job requiring a plumber to remove the blockage… but do not panic, as it is a task which is often easy to fix by using our FREE yet simple method. In the first instance we are going to try a mop and a sturdy plastic bag. As you can see from the many comments we’ve had, it seems that many people have had success with blocked toilets using our ‘super sized plunger’ which is made simply from an old mop with a plastic bag tied around the head. Make sure the bag is sturdy and won’t tear too easily. This seems to be a sure fire way to shift the stubborn blockages that other plungers just can’t deal with. Best of all it’s FREE!!
So, if you’re stuck, before calling a plumber, give it a go. And please leave us a comment at the bottom of the page if it works (or not). Recent comments include:
- “Amazing! I had a horribly blocked toilet for two days and tried everything. I was about to call a plumber when I found this web page. This method worked so quickly, I couldn’t believe it. It saved me the cost and embarrassment of calling a plumber. Thank you!”
Jane – 14-Oct-14 - “Worked so well it made me laugh. Spent 2 days using various chemicals, flushing, hot water and all other methods. Finally decided 2 buy a mop and it worked in about 5 seconds. Awesome tip”
clarkee – 28-Sep-14 - “Fabulous method! Fixed the problem in less than a minute! So glad I came across this page. Feel like a domestic goddess now!”
nickers – 23-Aug-14 - “How ironic that I look online for just about everything but never ONCE thought to look online when the (newly installed!!) toilet decided to act up on a Bank Holiday weekend! I didn’t have cable ties but I “double bagged” the plastic bags, twisted 2 handles together (to make one sturdier one), wrapped the handles around the stick and tied really tight. Got a little nervous when it didn’t work on the first go buy, as they say, if at first you don’t succeed…Thank you…Thank You…THANK YOU!!!”

Our Step By Step Guide…
Or The Conventional Way
To unblock a blocked toilet conventionally rather than using the mop and bag method, here are the Essential Tools you will need:
- Plunger
- Rubber Gloves
- Goggles
- Bucket
- Clearing Rods
- Auger
What Causes a Blockage?
Unfortunately, toilets occasionally do get blocked, usually due to too much toilet paper or heavy loads being put down the pan. First things first, you need to find the location of the blockage. If you have drain inspection covers outside, it is worth lifting the one nearest the pan. If the chamber is full, you need to try to clear the blockage in the pipes or around the drain either using a specialist rod or a makeshift device, such as a wire or piece of wood. If the Drain Is Unblocked, the blockage must be located somewhere between the chamber and the pan. In most cases, the blockage is found at the pan itself.
Unblocking the Pan
Following these simple steps should fix most blockages:
- Try pushing a flexible drain cleaning wire down the WC pan.
- It is a good idea to ask someone to observe the drain chamber while you are doing this to see if the item causing the blockage emerges. Anything emerging that may have caused the blockage should be removed. If you don’t remove an offending item, you only run the risk of it causing a blockage further down the system which may be more difficult to unblock.
- It’s worth using a plunger or auger (see below) if you have one.
- A chemical drain cleaner or caustic soda may help, but you must follow the instructions carefully and remember these products need to be handled safely. Always use rubber gloves.
Plunger Basics
Try using a plunger to unblock the damage. Most people have a cup shaped plunger but this does not always work and can be a bit messy. Toilets bowls benefit from a specialist flange shaped or a ball shaped plunger. Both these types of plunger have a bottom which is shaped to seal the opening in the bottom of the toilet bowl. This seal action as you plunge creates the necessary vacuum and pressure and is more effective.
Toilet Auger
A toilet or WC auger, available from most hardware stores, is a special plumbing tool used to clear blocked toilets. This device uses a flexible clearing rod with a hand crank, a long sleeve handle and a special auger device at the end which is used to break blockages or retrieve them. The auger drops into the toilet as far as possible. It reaches about 0.5 metres. The auger is connected via the flexible shaft to the crank handle which you control. When the obstruction is discovered you clamp and turn the cranked handle and either push or pull the blockage to dislodge it. Once the blockage is removed flush and clean your loo and disinfect the auger.
More Top Tips
Another useful tip is to consider draining water from your toilet pan. If the water level in the pan of your WC is high, you should consider this. Try using any old container to bale out the water first or you can use a hose to siphon it off. You can also try pouring hot or boiling water down the pan as an alternative to using caustic soda. Often this can be helpful and will break down clogged up matter down your waste pipe.

used mop with bag on it work great , thanks
ABSOLUTELY HAVE to agree with lush! In fact ‘great’ is an understatement! it was f**in AWESOME! Thank you Alan Cole! You made my day!
Have to agree with lush and cloggedpottie. F**in awesome is also an understatement. Thank god i’m not buying rods or calling out plumbers. Brilliant idea!!!!
I would also like to thank Lush to the max. I refused to call out Dyno Rod because I am quite able to take care of things in the home so when my toilet got blocked I was resolved to sort it myself. After Bleach, Boiling hot water, Caustic Soda, Spirit of Salts, One Shot and finally buying a plunger I was at the end of my tether and was considering calling in the experts but I turned to the internet once more and stumbled upon Lush’s comment about the mop with a bag over it, so I had nothing to lose so I tried it and guess what? The bag spilt but the mop done it all by itself! Please spread this to All forums ‘The mop is mightier than the Rod!’
Just used the mop and bag trick to unblock my toilet to great effect. Thanks!
Husband failed the task (!) so I called some plumbers for quotes. Then searched net and found this post. Just tried the mop trick – thanks, worked brilliantly – poo came up water went down. Need new mop as head fell off but was very old and much cheaper than the £75 call out I was quoted!! GIRL/MOP POWER!
Also used mop with a bag on it, worked first try. Cheers Lush, you are my interweb hero.
Spent all day trying to unblock the toilet then realised I have the power of the internet lost all hope until I found this website and the mop really worked thanks guys.
After spending all sunday trying to flush a blocked loo and ending up with my hands in it with no result, I tried the mop and bag trick, 30 seconds later, a free flowing loo. thanks a million you are a star !!
The bag over a mop really works – very pleased otherwise this Friday night would have been disasterous!Thank you soooooo much!!!!
My toilet is not blocked in the sense that it flushes (the bowl fills quite high) but the water level after flushing is very low. Is this because something is stuck in it the otherside of the bend? or is something else causing this? How do I get it to normal? Any suggestions welcomed, thanks.
Tried chemicals, plunger, hot water, flexible metal unblocker, nothing worked. I was on the point of calling in a plumber when I tried the mop and bag method. Two minutes later, my toilet was unblocked. Utter genius!
Spent all morning trying to unblock the toilet about to give up ,tried the internet found this website, used the mop and bag trick it worked thanks guys
After spending 3 hours trying to unblock a very disgusting toilet, we were at the end of our tether and had totally run out of ideas! I stumbled across this website and told my partner about the mop & bag trick.oh my word it worked perfectly and almost straight away! thankyou for the tip, I will remember this for future reference!
Weeandy – 18 October 2011 @ 6:44 PM You have the same problem my drains suffer from.the blockage is further down the line.in my case after the drain cover next to the toilet and the main shared drain. The high level of water is when the pipe is holding back the stuff.and the low level is when it lets go and sucks every thing with it. One trick I have found that wourk is fill the bath & all sinks then flush and let every thin go at once the pressure clears the block.
Yep Brilliant! Toilet blocked first thing Sunday morning, Dad was getting stressed out about it and panicking and was stressing me out in the process so I quietly sneaked off and consulted the wonder that is the internet – mop and bad trick worked a treat! Thanks Muchly!
Mop thing worked wonders … oh the joy and contentment !!! Thank you :D

Just had to say, we had a blocked toilet at work for days as we couldnt unblock it!We tried everything to get it working again (even had hands down there!!) So I thought trying it one more way wouldnt hurt as long as we had a working toilet at the end of it and no expensive bill!!! We was extremely surprised when the bag and mop method worked!!! So thank you very much thats AMAZING!!!!
The mop technique just workout few minutes ago. Thanks to your advice
After trying to unblock the toilet for hours I began to give up and get ready for the cost and embarrassment of calling someone out. In the past I have used a coathanger and its always done the trick but not this time! Then I came across the mop/ bag tip! I rushed up to get the mop, tied a bag round the bottom and started to plunge at first it didn’t seem to help but the water had already gone down by then but the toilet was still blocked and full of ****! So I gave it a flush so the water filled the toilet to the rim again and plunged and straight away it did the trick !. Thank you this is the best tip I’ve ever read.
The mop and bag trick works – this should be taught in schools! I live in a 15th floor flat and was dreading the thought of an overflowing toilet and having to warn the people in the flat below. Thank you so much x x x x
Why did we not come accross the mop trick sooner fab …..
Ive tried the mop and bag trick how does it work for all of you and not for me? ive got a blockage in the pipes and cant get to the drainage as its between two houses and im too fat to fit in between any other soloutions would be greatful as I have my fieance comming to my house in weeks time and dont want bad smells in the bedroom as its ensuit please help
Thanks goodness for this tip! 9.30 on Saturday night, our only toilet blocked up. dashed across the road to the nearest superstore, just as they were closing to buy a plunger, only to find they don’t sell them! Used this tip and it worked after two vigorous attempts. My only additional tip would be to either use really thick plastic bags or to wrap 3 or 4 round, because mine tore through almost immediately and the mop had to be bleached within an inch of its life.
Absolutely fantastic idea. Worked a treat and as I had a mop and a bag it cost me nothing. I am really grateful for this tip.
I don’t normally comment on sites like this but felt like I had to for this one! I spent over two hours trying to unblock my toilet that was blocked by none other than my partners overzealous need for toilet paper. I had almost given up hope when this site came up on a google search, but I thought it was worth a try. It seriously was, because after wrapping 5 plastic bags around my mop and plunging the toilet for all it was worth, a quick flush then all was well again! I couldn’t quite believe that after just 5 minutes my problem was solved and my mop was bone dry, although I gave it a quick bleach just in case! I’d recommend this to anyone with a blocked toilet…there’s not even a need for a regular plunger!
Toilet was blocked similar to Weeandy fantastic tip Sir saved me a small fortune as toilet is fully surrounded around the rear with tiles. Even have rodding poles alas no success until the mop trip. Thanks a millionDaveydavid
I nearly gave up on trying to unblock my loo! But came across this website and really thought the method suggested with mop and a carrier bag really wasn’t gonna work but thought worth a try and thank god I did, it worked a treat! Thank you so much! What a life saver :)
Mop worked perfect, my house mate blocked our loo for the. umm. ive lost track, usually he is able to wrap a bag around his arm and push it down or pull it out, untill now, and then I remembered seeing someone using a mop in a loo, so I gave it a go, no plastic bag, just got it in there, a bit of plunging, pulled it out, and away went the water, so glad to not have to call a plumber
Thank you SO much .. Saved me a bomb on plumbers fees ????????
Thank you internet, and DIY basics, another success story for the mop/bag plunger! My mop is soaking in bleach, in case I ever have to do it again ;-)
Thanks to this website, I put a plastic bag over a mop head and a horrendous blockage got fixed instantly. Thank you so much. I never leave feedback on websites but in this case I thought I should say how awesome and effective the advise was. And easy. And Free. Many thanks.
Thank you so much for this site. l have had a hell week trying all sorts, causic soda plungers etc but all my money just got wasted for nothing. your method worked in exactly 6seconds. l could not believe it!!!!! will be telling all my mates now after l got covered in poo after trying some other methods.
bloody amazing! I never comment on these sites but I’ve been trying to unblock a toilet for 2 hours and the mop did it in 10 seconds. Saved me a huge amount of agro. Now to bleach the bathroom, the mop, the buckets, myself and the universe in general…. thanks so much
Can’t believe it! Spent all day trying to unblock loo, even cut my hand on my pump action power plunger trying to shift it, so looking up what to do online I tied a bin bag around the mop and had a go! First couple of minutes nothing. Suddenly it just let go!! Can’t believe it’s cleared, flushed the loo 5 times to check!! It’s gone!! Amazing thank you!!!
Totally unbelievable! This really does work! I read this and thought (probably like you) that this won’t work but it did and I am so relieved. I can’t thank this site enough for the money, time and worry it has saved me. I got my mop and a black bin liner – didn’t even have to tie it round the mop – because the bag is so big it reached up the handle of the mop and I held it. I literally put the mop in the toilet bowl, lifted it out and plunged it back in – not even too hard and it cleared it straight away. Sorry to witter on but it’s amazing. Even if you’re not sure about it, just try it – you’ve nothing to lose! Thanks again DIYBasics!
Wish I typed this problem in an hour ago ,before I had piece of hose pipe, hands and arms down the toilet, even boiling water. About to have a breakdown then tried your method. Oh my god you’re amazing, worked in 10 seconds thankyou so much.
So pleased I found this website: toilet was blocked yesterday (still don’t know why but suspect a child who won’t admit to it!). Found this website, and one old Vileda mop plus 2 Tesco carrier bags and 5 ‘plunges’ later, the toilet flushed again! So easy, and saved me going out to buy a toilet plunger, chemical gunk and getting hands-on.
Thank you so much for this tip! Just got my toilet unblocked, it took a bit of perseverance but saved a fortune in plumber’s fees. Absolutely brilliant! X

Voila a couple of shoves and a carrier bag later and goodbye blockage ! I cant tell you how relieved i am ! Great tip everyone should try this :-))))))

Well I’m amazed! After spending two hours trying to unblock our toilet last night using a hose pipe, air pipe, wire cloths hanger and a small plunger, I gave up in despair and went to bed. This morning I went on the internet for a solution and came across your tip. It took me longer to attach the plastic bag than it did to unblock the toilet, a super tip and one I’ll remember well, many many thanks.
THIS REALLY DOES WORK.having spent days with plunger over flowing, hot buckets of soapy water, bleach I was at my wits end I found this site and thought what have I got to lose before I call out the professionals, I paid £1.99 for a mop head fitted a handle covered with a black bag followed their instructions and hey presto it cleared, I can’t thank you enough BRILLIANT idea and CHEAP.

This is the best plumbing tip ever. Sorted my blocked toilet within 20mins. Cheaper than a plunger or rods. I knew I was saving those carrier bags for something.
spent whole morning trying to unblock toilet just read this and tried it and hey presto no more blocked toilet couldn’t beleive it
This worked. Had to throw away a decent john lewis carrier bag but avoided expensive plumber call out rates! Had tried clearing rods too, and a couple of pushes of the magic mop did the trick.
like to agree with cj,s comment had a full loo pan full to the brim of nasty stuff and water, tried rods, wire brush, was sceptical thought hell give it a go 4 or 5 slow pushes and wow water cleared, new flush and cleared thanks a million awesome!!!!
Best tip ever. Spent 2 hours with my arm and various implements down the toilet before finding your tip. Took me 2 minutes, problem solved. Thankyou very much.
What a great tip…spent ages trying to unblock loo…then tried google for ideas, came upon this one and within 5 minutes problem was sorted….genius really
WOW!!! Had been trying for well over an hour to unblock the loo. Vaccuum on blow, down a tube resulted in (stuff) flying up and out. Looked on line (should have done this first) what a fantastic idea. The head broke from the handle but pushed it down by hand and in seconds it was clear. Like to buy you a pint. On my way to buy a new mop, in case it ever happens again. Thank you SO much.
Thank you so much! Cleared in moments! You star!
WOW WOW WOW- just tried this fabulous trick and it worked brilliantly. The husband is going to think I am nothing short of genius when he gets home

I”m so pleased I’m going to.break out the choccie biscuits with my next tea now I don,t have to worry about spending a penny ! Please don’t expect.to fail ladies ,take the plunger and save your pennies for.the biccies.
Excellent result with the mop and plastic bag. Quite easy and quick positive result and no cost to pay Thank you big relief
What a star!! I’d tried the washing up liquid trick, the hot water from waist height and a whole bottle of expensive drain unblocker all to no avail. A couple of goes with the mop and plastic bag and lo! One clear running toilet. Wish I’d found this first time I googled the problem. Thank you
Works like a charm !!!!!! unblocked the loo in seconds !!! Wife extremely impressed !!!! Truly Grateful for the amazing tip.
Didn’t have a mop to hand but my toilet brush has quite a large head so wrapped it in a strong garden rubbish bag and holding the handle over the bag gave it a good few plunges and”eureka” I heard the pipe gurgle and the blockage was gone.Thankyoux
Thanks guys absolutely brilliant worked first time.
Very effective, simple brilliant idea !! sceptical at first shouldn’t of worried!!! some genius tiled around loo so it was worth a go and BOOOM …..JOB DONE !!!
Thanks man!! Nice trick, worked first time, unblocked three or four good pushes :D Thought was going to have to pay over £100
(toilet unblocking method) thank you so much for this fantastic tip, we had recently brought a new steam mop to replace our old conventional mop, im so glad that we didn’t throw it away as this method unblocked our toilet first attempt, im so impressed that im going to pass this tip onto family & friends and shall continue to use this method again within the near future. kind regards.
Thanks, this worked after many arguments with the husband!
Fantastic, husband a builder, son a plumber, just mugged them both off with this tip. Cleared the blockage like a dream :)
Wow, worked a treat. Instant results. thanks very much.
thanks so much for this idea. Have a loo that’s been backing up for a while and required multiple flushes to get anything to go. Tried this along with hot water and soda, it did take four or five attempts but it’s back to its old self again now :)
Awesome. It works. Need to persevere at plunging, so I have discovered after 3 days of blockage! Short frequent plunges all the way now for me!!!
Worked a treat! A few pushes with the mop and my toilet now unblocked!
:), 3 plunges and the toilet was unbloked. Ace tip thnx
OMG it worked!! So glad we hadn’t thrown our old mop away, don’t think the steam mop would appreciate being shoved down the toilet! Had tried several other things, although we weren’t panicking yet as we have 3 loos and it was my son’s that was blocked. Still nice to have all loos operational again!!! Thanks so much, definitely one to remember!
Dead easy to do and it actually works :) :) :)
Thank you so much ….I had my toilet unblocked in two minutes
hi, thank you so much! tried everything, plunger, caustic soda, bleach… we lost hope and then mop and carrier bag wrapped around helped immediately! thank you very much
Oh my god, how brilliant I was almost panicking, how useful Is a mop, feel like I’ve won lotto, lol
Definitely try this… It worked for me and saved me buying a tool from a DIY shop (that would probably not work!)
wow that really works and a fantastic simple idea thankyou
Omg this worked fantastically. Thank you
Oh my god, this bloody works! It’s amazing! Saved me another expensive trip from plumber! X
Hi, Thank you very much for the tip, it really works well. I´m really grateful that you share this solution with all of us.
Usually use a toilet brush to create some back pressure, but today’s blockage wouldn’t be sifted. Used the bag and mob method shown here and bingo! Thanks a lot!
This was such a good tip…I only tried it out of desperation…literally.Brilliant !!!!
Thank you so much! Was on the verge of calling a plumber when decided to have a look on line. This WORKED within about five minutes. Thank you
My toilet has been blocked for almost 2 weeks, not a total disaster as I have a downstairs loo. But I have tried everything known to man (or woman in my case!) and it’s just not shifted the blockage – normal plunger, dishwasher liquid and hot water, caustic soda, bicarb and vinegar – all to no avail. On the verge of reluctantly calling a plumber, I saw your advice and set to …a £3 cotton mop from Poundstretcher, double bagged Tesco’s carrier bags and a cable tie made amazingly short work of the loo blockage. I tried it with little water in the pan (it has been draining slowly) and when that didn’t work I flushed to fill the pan and carefully ‘plunged’ – only took 4-5 plunges and the water suddenly drained away! I must admit I had a little dance of victory around my bathroom – having first carefully placed the makeshift plunger into an old bucket of course!! Thank you so much – what a cheap and successful tip :))
Amazing! worked first time, sooo happy!
Great comments guys, we’re glad it’s working for everyone!
Sooooo excited! Just unblocked my toilet! Phew, so glad. Thankyou.
It works just been out bought a pound mop. After 3 plunges toliet became unblocked. Had been there for nearly 1hr trying orher methods. Thank you thank you.
Mop+ strong plastic bag + cable tie = Worked after all else failed! Thanks so much Alan! My wife was so impressed she wants to know if you have any other tips of this calibre!
I have a toilet that is standing, stagnant water- shoved hand down and it’s clear. Will this work for me? Based on everyone else I’m going to try anyway!
I stumbled upon this through google. Wow this seriously works. In two seconds our blocked toilet which had been blocked for days, caustic soda down it and all, finally unblocked. I didn’t understand how this would work but I realise now it’s the pushing action which moves the blockage through, rather than plunges it up. Amazing. Thank you!
It works. Simple. Now can go to pub and spend some of money and use the time saved in a far better way!
Thank you. The bag attached to a mop method unblocked the toilet on the first attempt. you are life-saver as I thought I would have to employ a plumber which I cannot afford right now
Amazing advice. Mop method has done it. Am rubbish at diy never thought i could do it. Was in a panic. Thanks so much. Nice straightforward advice that works!
I have faced this kind of problem many times because my toilet had always flush problem or some dirt problem occurred, So i used to make hard flush for my toilet or i clean my vent pipe for water pressure. I suggest always take care of toilet flush/pipes because they are important for plumbing repairs.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! This is an AWESOME tip! It literally took me 5 minutes to set up this improv plunger and 15 secs of plunging and everything was cleared! Before that I’d tried so many other methods the entire day without success!
Many thanks only had to push it down twice
Brilliant idea my toilet has been blocked for 3 days this unblocked it straight away
Absolutely FANTASTIC – worked first time and saved me phoning my landlord and having to wait for him/and or a plumber. Thanks, thanks, thanks
I had tried various drain unblockers without success and was going to ‘phone a plumber when I tried this as a last resort… and it worked. Thank you so much.
Amazing!!!! I didn’t have a mop so wrapped the plunger in a towel in a black bin liner. One push and it was cleared! Still high-5-ing myself!!!
Absolutely brilliant it worked first time. I’m not sure how it works but it does. I tied a broken bit of an exercise band around my . Before I tried this when I flushed the water was nearly over flowing so I emptied as much water as I could with an old jug.
Thanks so much. my blocked toilets been stressing me up. Tried everything I could except call a plumber. A plunger helped a little but a little doesn cut it with such things. in my deperation I tried this n Viola!!! problem solved. plus I have a brand new mop im sure will help alot around the house thanks again :)
I have tried the mop method a couple of times and it has worked. Today I had the same problem and although it took me about 10 attempts eventually my perseverance paid off and a huge roar followed by a torrent of water etc went down the sleuce pipe. Phew! Mightily relieved. This method takes a bit of effort and your have to be careful not to slop any waste over the top of the toilet but the feeling when it works is immense. I have no idea how much a plumber would charge to complicate the process in order to justify his fee but one Wilko mop and a couple of Asda plastic bags must be the cheapest method on the planet. Thanks for the advice.
I rent this house from a very nasty moron of a man. The toilet was blocked for 4 days. I flushed and flushed and flushed. Had to wait 4 hours after each flush for the water to find its normal level before I could flush. My landlord came yesterday and looked around up stairs. I was praying he wouldn’t see it. He didn’t see it. Phew. I put fabric conditioner down to try and slip it through. So then I saw your method. 3 plunges it was gone. The relief I felt after was great. Brilliant method. THANKS SO MUCH. Fabe
unreal, quick easy and powerful. had bought a fancy plunger, no joy. Gave the bag a try and worked, think i iwll drive about in van and charge a fortune unblocking toilets lol.
This does work! Tried testes and results were proved. Saved me about 50 quid getting a man out to do the job!
Nothing ever works for me – but this did! Fantastic – was v depressed at the thought of paying for a plumber. One Pound shop mop and a bin liner and all done – can’t believe it!
Thank you so much, the tip worked a treat. I had been trying to unblock it with cleaner and boiling water….you saved me a fortune!
Million thanks! Mop worked and am so grateful…awesome!
Fabulous method! Fixed the problem in less than a minute! So glad I came across this page. Feel like a domestic goddess now!
How ironic that I look online for just about everything but never ONCE thought to look online when the (newly installed!!) toilet decided to act up on a Bank Holiday weekend! I didn’t have cable ties but I “double bagged” the plastic bags, twisted 2 handles together (to make one sturdier one), wrapped the handles around the stick and tied really tight. Got a little nervous when it didn’t work on the first go buy, as they say, if at first you don’t succeed…Thank you…Thank You…THANK YOU!!!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! Both to the author for posting this tip, and to all the other people who commented on their success. So many positive comments made me try this, after facing my worst ever blocked toilet situation which was beginning to make me quite upset and panicked. It really did work and cleared the blockage, my toilet is completely back to normal and I am so happy!
Worked a treat!! After looking at expensive potions and plungers in the DIY store I thought I’d give some internet tips ago before making any purchases. First I tried boiling water and washing up liquid to no avail! I did some searching and found this little gem of information and after suffering the blockage getting worse over the period of a week, it was sorted within minutes! Toilet has never flushed and emptied so well!
Absolutely brilliant even worked on a Spanish loo. Husband was sceptical but very happy and surprised with the results . Thank you .
Just tried this – was so sceptical, just didn’t seem to be true that this could be so easy. But it IS!! Worked just as described, took less than 30 seconds if I am honest. Last time this happened I called a plumber and he fixed it in the same amount of time. As he was not around I googled thinking I could find a tool to do it myself and found this. Feeling so pleased with myself and so grateful for this advice!
What a fantastic tip! Worked in seconds. Thank you so much :-))
Wow, just read this site, used a mop head with two flannels wrapped ring the end and a plastic bag, worked first time, brilliant!
First plunge and poops away, Brilliant for a Sunday morning chore!
My toilet had been blocked for days and had tried other methods that did not work, and I started to getting worried. I came across this tip and this method worked like a charm with one try. Thank You so much. Very relieved.
FANTASTIC…..would never have thought of this, but it worked in 2 tries. Thanks. Saved me at least £50 :)
Its Sundays in the the early evening, my daughter tells me the toilet is looking strange. I check and its blocked, l googled how to unblock the toilet and saw your tip. I pushed down yhe first time, nothing happened, tried again( this time pushing harder) and down everything went. Fantastic solution, thanks a million guys.
I am in shock!!!! It worked in a few seconds, thank you so much.
Amazing it worked in seconds. Thank you soo much!
Wow! The mop and bag method worked straight away! I tried washing powder with hot water before unsuccessfully..
Persevere! If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again! Almost gave up, seemed to make it worse at first, came back and re-read the posts and gave it another try. Broke the mop handle, but it worked!
I didn’t have a mop, looked around for something suitable and used a length of flexable pipe insulation, put a thick carrier bag on, worked a treat. Thank you
OK so I really didnt think this was going to work. Second time worked a treat after the last 2 hours with hot soapy water, plungers and lots of mess. What a gem, thanks
Tried all day to unblock my toilet, with no success. Tried the mop and bag trick and it worked instantly.
Worked so well it made me laugh. Spent 2 days using various chemicals, flushing, hot water and all other methods. Finally decided 2 buy a mop and it worked in about 5 seconds. Awesome tip
It works !!! Was a little skeptical but it works!!!
I was extremely sceptical on reading this mop/bag resolution. But it really works. I had tried a plunger but couldn’t get the correct air seal. Also used a hose pipe which only slightly moved the blockage – but once I read this and had a go, using one of those Vileda cloth tape type mops in a heavy duty plastic bag, hey presto. The blockage was caused by too much tissue paper, and I think this works because the mop and bag combined make an excellent seal and therefore can exert enough pressure to dislodge this type of blockage.
I was very sceptical it did take 2 minutes of plunging but it worked thank you very much :)
Stuck torpedo dispatched, awesome method
FANTASTIC didnt believe it would work BUT IT DID dont be frightened it makes a bit of water mess but it worked in bout 2-3 goes after the fear of making a mess was overcome took all of 5 minutes from finding the mop to job done dont you just love the internet
I was very dubious about the successfulness of this method, bur at 6am on a Sunday morning, I gave it a try and it worked with just 2 plunges. Totally awesome trick, BIG thanks to the clever clogs who posted it!
Amazing! I had a horribly blocked toilet for two days and tried everything. I was about to call a plumber when I found this web page. This method worked so quickly, I couldn’t believe it. It saved me the cost and embarrassment of calling a plumber. Thank you!
Tried the method of mop and plastic bag, worked like a charm! A big thank you!
@Jane – I’m glad we were able to help!
Fantastic advice on the toilet unblocking, it worked a treat first time *
Thankyou so much it worked the third time I did it I was just about ready to call someone when I went on line and saw the mop method babs
Quality. Arriving home after hours to find a blockage isn’t the best, solved in two attempts! Thank you!
The best way ever to unblock a toilet thank you so much worked with in seconds once again thank you
Tried unblocking my toilet for several days now, tried everything, just about to give up when I saw your website, tried the method worked first time.Thank you ever so much. paul
HAVING BORROWED AN AIR VACUMED PLUNGER I SET TO UNBLOCK MY TOILET WHICH HAD BEEN BLOCKED FOR ABOUT 38 HOURS. AFTER LIFTING THE MANHOLE COVER IN MY GARDEN AND SEVERAL BUCKETS LATER OF VILE STUFF FROM MY TOILET I GAVE UP AND WAS ABOUT TO GO FOR THE WELL KNOWN DRAIN UNBLOCKER WHEN PASSING MY COMPUTER I FOUND YOUR TIP WITH THE MOP AND BAG, BUT REALLY DIDNT HAVE MUCH FAITH BUT GAVE IT A TRY. AFTER THE 3 RD PLUNGE AND NO SUCCESS, FEELING VERY DISHEARTENED I GAVE IT THE 4TH PLUNGE AND A COUPLE OF GURGLES AND AWAY IT WENT. I WAS AMAZED. THIS TIP IS WORTH ITS WEIGHT IN GOLD AS SO MANY NEW TOILETS USE SO MUCH LESS WATER AND THERE IS VERY LITTLE FORCE TO DO ANYTHING. MANY MANY THANKS FOR THIS BRILLIANT TIP.
Blimey! That’s amazing! Thank you very much.
TThank you so much! The toilet brush just wouldn’t work. Was dreading getting a plumber out. Tried this and it worked first time!
Didn’t work :( I have 2 loo’s blocked, luckily we have a 3rd but at my wits end now :(((
Ok it worked lol… 1 toilet down, 1 to go. Fingers crossed ??
Thank you so much for this tip. I was cracking up!! Nearly a week with 2 blocked toilets was driving my family mad. I came across this site today and within an hour both loo’s were sorted. I recommend this . Thank you so much :)))
Thank you so much. It worked!!!! Only took minutes too :-)
Fantastic tip Highly recommend giving it o go!!! ??
Absolutely brilliant. Worked within a few seconds. Thank you so very much for this.
Read this and thought, why not! Brilliant, think we have unblocked the problem, but not sure if it is totally unblocked. The toilet flushes fine, the water drains away, maybe I am just being paranoid!!
Omg this really does work!!! Sadly Im so pleased with myself for rectifying it ??!!!! Wish Id seen this before getting my rubber-gloved hands down ??
I was totally amazed. After trying many different products and rodding the loo, the mop and plastic bag worked a treat and shifted the blockage in a few seconds.
Used a home made mop with ball wool strong carrier bag an old brush pole ,worked in 2 pushes thank goodness as was pulling my hair out. Previous had tried everything
I tried to unblock with a liquid drain clearer overnight, but no luck. Came across this diy tip and Bingo, feel so relieved you wouldn’t imagine!!! Thanks
Our new toilet blocked. After two days of using the local pubs toilets I came across this page. Although I didn’t have a mop I did have a plunger and rubber gloves! After plunging for 3 or 4 minutes hurrah….thanks DIY basics
I can’t tell you how much money i have wasted on deblocker chemicals, plungers and rods only to be so exasperated as to look up google and find this trick. A mop, a bin bag and 10 minutes later…unblocked. i coukd kiss the publisher of this page.
I spent an hour and a half with my arm down the pan used everything at my disposal to clear it and to no avail ,then came across this then a minute later my toilet was unblocked thanks for such a great tip works wonders will remember this for next time.
OMG!!! I have spent a whole day trying to unblock my toilet after my son put a load of wet wipes down it. Then i decided to google it and came across this method. I did giggle at the thought of it but IT WORKED FIRST TIME! a whole day wasted on other methods i laughed histericly when it worked. Thanks for the tip!!!
Unbelievable! Wedding day, many visitors, clogged toilet- what a perfect scenario! Tried whole morning, friends tried all evening nothing! it took me less than 2 minutes with a mob. Thank you , thank you very much.
Absolutely fantastic. Put on gloves and felt around the U-bend for any blockage then opened up the manhole in the garden where everything looked as it should be. After reading your advice about a giant mop plunger, I got to work for a minute and now everything is perfect. Thank you for a brilliant, yet simple, piece of advice.
Worked in literally 3 seconds!!! Amazing tip!! Thanks so much x
I couldn’t believe when I read through people’s comments and still decided to give it a try after spending £30 in caustic soda….I am so happy this done the job in 6 secs of trying…Thank u
Have been very frustrated with a blocked toilet all day. It normally just goes away after a few flushes! But not today. Even put Mr muscle down it to be creative. It’s a drain afterall but no, the water was filled to the brim and not going anywhere and resorted to looking on line and followed this procedure and in literally seconds – I now have a normal working toilet . tHank you so very much! COuld t afford to call the plumbers out. This really des work and very well. I was thinking I would have to cancel my evening out and wait in all night for a plumber! Thank you singleton in SE19. I also feel like a domestic GoDDESs! X
We’ve been blighted by a blocked loo for over a week – thankfully it’s just the 2 of us and we have a second bathroom. I’d tried various things that I’d read online (plunger, coat hanger, baking soda, etc) to no avail, and I must admit I was not optimistic about this method. But I gave it a go. It took a couple of tries, but then… Bingo! Thank you so much – the simple mop and carrier bag created The Ultimate Plunger! Saved me a fortune, not to mention all the embarrassment!
This method saved an expensive call out to a plumber works brilliantly great tip
Absolutely amazing – took about 10-15 goes but I could tell it was helping from the first plunge and then – done! Great tip, thank you
Thanks for your blog. This was fantastic. Your article helped me a lot. My toilet was blocked for over 4 days & I didnt know what to do. I tried the toilet brush, then bought the toilet unblock liquid and poured hot water but nothing. It was not working. Then I tried your idea. Bought a new mop, used the mop & it cleared the toilet within a few flushes & now the toilet is working smooth. Thanks for your help. Id recommend your article to everyone. EXCELLENT!
Thank you so much for your blog, my toilet got blocked tonight and I was panicking about what to do as it is currently early hours of the morning thinking I’ve got to call a plumber out and then I went onto Google and found this website, this blog has saved me so much hassle and grief on what I should do, thanks again, you guys are the best
Absolutely amazing, after using plungers, lotions, potions, washing up liquid, boiling water and all sorts of remedies, I was getting a bit concerned this was going to end up an expensive emergency call out to sort it out, so on reading this page, what had I got to lose? It worked immediately, I couldn’t believe it! Well done whoever thought of it. You have probably saved me a few hundreds quid!!!
I can verify that this tip worked for me within minutes! I was just about to call a plumber after many failed attempts with boiling water, a toilet brush and even a wire coat hanger.
OMG! So simple and yet completely effective, all cleared in less than 30 seconds! Thank you!!!
Our toilet duck had fallen off into the toilet and someone just flushed it anyway. So toilet got blocked and I stuck my hand up the toilet and couldn’t feel anything. First tried a normal plunger which didn’t work, then I found this site and tried the mop and bag idea and sorted it. Thanks so much
My Teenage Son left me with an early morning delight that a coat hanger could not resolve. Google and your website had me shooting off to Tesco to grab a mop and some bin liners. I dragged him out of bed to assist and it was done in 5 seconds. WOW!!!!!!!
Had blocked toilet for 3 days, this sorted it in about 3 minutes OMG can’t believe how easy it was, thanks for the great tip!
Absolutely brilliant. Took 20 seconds to resolve the issue using this method. Thank you
I was starting to panic as my toilet was badly blocked. Found this website and one downward push of my homemade toilet plunger and the water drained away straight away. A couple of test flushes to check and good as new again. I can now poo until my heart is content! :-)
OMG this worked after trying everything else LOL. So simple. I could not wrap my mind around it but I tried it anyway and success
Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you!!! My toilet had been blocked since New Year’s Eve for the first time ever. I tried my best to clear it by poking a coat hanger down it, boiling water and a whole bottle of sink and drain unplugger all to no avail! I have just had my contract terminated at work (31st Dec 14) and haven’t found another job yet so I was really stressed and couldn’t afford a plumber and didn’t know anyone who could help me. I went on your site and to be honest I was quite sceptical but it honestly worked in about 4 seconds of just pushing the mop twice in the loo! My loo is back to it’s lovely clean and fresh self and I have your site to thank. I am amazed and would like to say to everyone……….”this really works, give it a try, you won’t be disappointed” and I am greatly in your debt! My toilet is now one less thing to worry about!
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Even though I’d read the other comments, I was sceptical that the ‘mop and plastic bag’ would work. Just thought I’d got nothing to lose before calling the plumber. Shouldn’t gave worried. It sorted the blockage within 30 secs. Again, thank you.
OMG!!!! I have just spent a few hours trying unblock the toilet to no avail. Then found this site and thought it has to be worth a try. Three big plunges with the mop and BINGO!!!! Absolute Genius. Happy days. Thanks for the tip.
Thanks so much for this advice. I had no mop so improvised with a short piece of broom handle and a toilet roll jammed on the end. I then covered the toilet roll with several plastic bags and tied handles tightly. The toilet roll fitted snuggly enough into the toilet cavity on plunging to cause a vacuum. After two plunges the toilet cleared. I pulled off the toilet roll and bags straight into dustbin!
Thanx I almost lost it with my blocked toilet , my son managed to unroll a whole toilet paper and dumped , it worked like magic
Amazing! Just worked, husband going mental saying we had to call a plumber, worked in 5 mins!!!! I am now a hero for finding this page! Thanks!!!!
Just tried this and it worked so delighted. Tried caustic soda, bicard and vinegar, a bottle of washing up liquid followed by conditioner, a wire hanger. Did not have a traditional mop but relented and asked a neighbour so glad I did.
Hideously blocked upstairs toilet, tricky angled outlet, plunger failed, hosing through with water at mains pressure from inside and outside also failed, 2 wasted hours including some partial dismantling of soil pipe, with nil effect. Went online and found this advice forum, don’t have a mop so put a cheap toilet roll on the (blunt) end of a cricket stump, 2 strong food bags over the lot, taped to shaft of cricket stump. Didn’t think the assembly was quite filling the pan outlet, so added a few spirals of thick kitchen towel and a strong carrier bag over the lot, more tape to hold it all together. 2 shoves with minimal effort, blockage gone like magic ! One thought; put some padding over the end of your brush handle / cricket stump : your assembly will succeed but may not survive intact, and a cracked pan would be no improvement on a blocked toilet ! I’m leaving this feedback because the enthusiasm of others motivated me to try this method. It works unbelievably quickly and effectively.
It works! Even with a toilet brush. Amazing. Thank you
I have been trying to unblock my toilet for three days now, I refused to give up, but my job was harder as I didn’t have the appropriate plunger. After an exhausted hour using every method I read on the forums, I decided to get back on the net hoping I would find another DIY method. Thankfully I came across this thread. Did exactly as advised with the mop, took about half an hour but it did the job. So relieved and grateful. Thanks a million.
Like others have commented… Had the rods out, the drain covers off.. hospepipe in the s bend…. I tried this and it was all done in 20 seconds… amazing… very pleased indeed… Looking forward to a nice plop in may favorite loo…. Thank you ever so much
unbelievable fantastic genial in french thanks a lot mop really works bravo to who found it
Worked after a few times. Saved. Thank you ??
blocked toilet 2 days…tried tipping buckets of water, wire coat hanger, karcher pressure washer! nothing moved. Looked on line found this advice… like others not convinced but worth a try for free…no mop so improvised using a baseball bat wrapping old carpet underlay with plastic bags tied with strong tape.pushed down into toilet…but needed to be wider to create seal so unwrapped and put some extra padding around base of bat using foam from old outdoor cushion and re- wrapped..pushed a few times and could “feel” the vacuum seal as pushed. A few pushed and then a gurgle…..bingo… toilet unblocked..flushed toilet and working fine. Sound advice. Make sure foam overlaps bottom of baseball bat to protect toilet.
Brilliant idea worked a treat only needed to pump it twice and the toilet was unblocked. Thanks for your advice. #Brilliant
Just used this method, and it’s worked, thank you so much as at the moment I cannot afford to cal a plumber out, thankyou once again
I love you I love you! I love you!!! I was home alone and panicking after 40 minutes of trying every method I knew with no luck so Googled how to unblock toilet and found you! I couldn’t get out and didn’t have a mop so I improvised and put a hand towel in a carrier bag and plunged 3 or 4 times and hey presto! I actually laughed out loud! Thank you so.much!!
Thank you so much for this very handy hint. Thought ‘oh no, not another problem to sort out, one of many of late’. I am not very practical, but getting better, and in the past have had to call out for ‘costly’ help, so this tip was a welcome remedy.
Brilliant! Spent all morning operating the flush and waiting for it to drain to no avail. Whole tub of caustic to no avail. I then read this. Old mop and two plastic bags. Two plunges and clear. Like others, no cable ties so used a rubber band. Double bagged the plunger part and remembered a third bag to put it in after I’d finished. Downstairs and out to the bin – remarkable!
This. Is. Amazing. Two days of blocked toilet solved in 10 seconds!
Fantastic worked straight away I was a little optamistic but wow really worked !!
Just used this method.I had to do it about 5 times, but ,hopefully clear now.Thankyou.
I’m so pleased my toilet is unblocked. I didn’t have to call out the plumber or ask my son for help. It took 10 seconds. Chuffed. Thank you.
Unbelievable. This was just amazing. Literally saved my sanity and the expenses I feared to pay for more professional assistance
Worked so fast and was also ridiculously funny!
Amazing! Tried everything else, coat hanger, plunger, expensive unblocking liquids, toilets been blocked for four days this worked in seconds!! Thankyou!
Thank you- this was brilliant and solved the problem! Took a few slow plunges, and then there was the sweet whoosh of success. As with others I had tried a crummy plunger and the soda + vinegar solution with no success.
Great tip! I was about to look up a number for Dynorod but came across this, gave it a go and it clears the blockage in seconds. I only used a standard carrier bag and tied it to the mop with its own handles
This is the best idea ever. Was on the verge of calling a plumber when I decided to googled how to unclog a blocked toilet. Worked first time. Absolutely great
Oh thank you so much. I had everything coming up in my blocked toilet bowl and I’m a bit ocd about dirty toilets so it too guts for me to try this and it worked sftrt three plunges. YEAH!!!.
I used this method the other day as our toilet blocked seemingly for no reason and we didn’t have a plunger. I was a bit cynical as to whether it would work but we did have an old mop so gave it a try. The first attempt didn’t work but tried it again and lo and behold the toilet cleared!
Thank god that all the plumbers i called this morning were busy as this has saved me money..Was worried we would be using neighbours toilet till sorted but this worked brilliantly..After a very bad day i am Very happy.
How easy is this! Had a blocked toilet for over a week, fortunately we have 2, tried the bucket of water and coat hanger methods and no joy.
Wow I used this as last resort spent the money on the product nothing worked until this
Absolutely brilliant money saving tip. Who needs a plunger or unblocking agents. I seriously didn’t think this would work but it did. Didn’t take long at all. Thank you
Absolutely genius. Cost me a fortune in products. I’m so relieved and giddy. I love you S x
Can’t believe how quickly this worked. I tried everything. I love you S x
Had a blocked loo for two days… Just saw this. It worked straight away! Thankyou so much :)
Well…I felt silly trying this but it worked after a couple of try’s! Couldn’t believe it, was ready to buy expensive parts/tools and remove the toilet but no need. I have told everyone how easy it is
Just tried this after the toilet being blocked for 4 days and being told by the council that if its our fault an £80 charge. toilets not flushed properly since new bathroom put in just before xmas. Anyway this method works brilliantly now have a unblocked toilet for the cost of a new mop! Thank you so much :}
@Goodison – I am glad this has worked for you and all the others on this site who have had success via this method.
Thank you so much….this worked first time no messing..I had been trying all day with things like metal coat hanger, rubber gloves etc without success. Will share my newfound knowledge with everyone I meet !!!!!!x
Thank you for the brilliant advice, I had s blocked toilet for a few days used coat hangers and even went out and bought some drainer unblocker liquid which done nothing! Decided to give this a go and it’s worked!!!
Thank you! I have the norovirus and two small children. I couldn’t cope with a blocked toilet too – thankfully, I don’t have to now. Thanks for the tip. So easy!
Brilliant. I did not believe something as simple as the mop and plastic bag would work. Four plunges and the job was done, after 4 days of trying other methods.
Fantastic method. Worked after 4 or 5 pushes. Thanks!
Thank you! Works brilliantly as a highly flexible plunger – much better than the real thing. Used a thick bin bag wrapped round a modern microfibre mop and held in place with an elastic band. Needed to plunge it a few times as it was a bad block but it was fixed in under a minute. This has got to become the preferred method.
Brilliant worked first time. Thanks. Will passthis tip on.
Good Friday don’t want to call a plumber out blocked upstairs loo, fortunately have a downstairs loo but annoying .Look up internet absolutely brilliant idea and so simple , it worked after a few goes. Saved a fortune.
Thank you so much. It worked perfectly!! Didn’t have to call out plumber on a bank holiday!!
Totally works!!! Been plunging all morning to no avail but saw this, got a mop and sturdy bag, tightened with an elastic band and boom – done!!!
Epic!!!! Worked a treat :) Thanks a bunch!
Thanks for the advice – had tried a variety of unblocking methods to no avail. No old mop, but tied some old rags around the top of an old pole, placed in plastic bag, plunged twice and it worked immediately!!!
Brilliant .This saved me a very wet miserable Sunday night and no doubt an expensive plumber.
Spent 3hrs last night with a coat hanger couldn’t clear it and got soaking wet in the process, spent 2 minutes this morning if that, pushed it down 8 to 10 times cleared thankyou.
Brilliant tip worked in seconds, thanks so much.
Well, I had to giggle!! My loo was well and truly blocked! I tried the baking soda and vinegar trick to no avail (I did start to get anxious as the resulting fizzing foam started to reach the rim!) I tried pouring hot water and washing liquid down, again to no avail. I was starting to worry what going to happen when I needed a ‘number two’ as its now nearing midnight and the loo had been blocked for hours and I wouldn’t be able to call out a plumber till the next day, when I came across this little gem. No mop but taped a hand towel round a broom head and covered it with a plastic bin bag….literally a couple of thrusts and wayhay!! the blockage disappeared. I flushed the loo a couple of times to test the clearance, and by jiminy, what a clever low-tech, but highly effective solution!! Thank you!! :)
WOW! Great tip and worked first time in seconds… oh the wonder of the internet. The toilet pan even looks a bit cleaner…. Used an old mop out the garage and 2 asda carrier bags and just one tie wrap…
Brilliant never of thought of a mop did not want to call someone out especially on a Sunday
Thank goodness you posted this – I was having a panic – rising (very) dirty water in loo that just wasn’t shifting. Unfortunately I didn’t have an old mop, so I used several supermarket carrier bags tied around the toilet brush ( and made sure I had my rubber gloves on !). after over and hour of me trying to unblock it before reading your website, it took just 1 minute of my makeshift version of the mop and plastic bags method and the loo was completely clear. My kids, my nose and my bank account thank you !
Wow many thanks after trying everything to unblock my toilet I came across this with the mob, it worked first time and very quickly was ready to call a plumber
Unblocked the toilet at first go and also the outside drain, all thanks to a sports plastic bag on the end of a mop. Brilliant tip.
Just have to say this is fantastic I just recently moved to a new country and am on a tight budget so the thought of having to buy anything let alone get a plumber out was just daunting. I tried numerous DIY methods and none seemed to work until i stumbled on this one. Thank you Thank you Thank you!
It worked two days with a blocked toilet! Brilliant saves the hefty cost of a plumber. Great tip. Spent ages pouring water down the wf and flushing no need.
Absolutely amazing would never have thought of this solution took 5 seconds, can’t thank you enough
Thank you so much for this. I spent nearly 2 hours trying everything I could think of. After googling I found this ‘remedy,’ took me about 10 seconds to clear the blockage and if I can do this anyone can as I’ve had a stroke and found it so damn easy Thank you again
Well I never! Worked in less than 10 seconds. Tried soda crystals, hot water all the usual stuff and this simple, no costs solution worked instantly! Thanks so much.
Loads and loads of BIG THAK YOU,S your post just saved my oooodles of cash ..Blocked toilet gone in 2 seconds! ??????????
thank you, you are a life saver. can not beleave how simple it was to do and worked first time after trying all day with no successes, again thank you. Olly
Absolutely bloody brilliant. After 4 days of constantly persevering (thank goodness we have another toilet) and on the verge of calling a plumber ($240 for the first hour including call out fee plus $120.00 for every hour thereafter) I hit the Google button and yes, the rest is history. The above method worked so dam quickly I was staggered beyond belief. Thanks for sharing people.
I have to say first I thought it was a silly idea, but then I tried it, IT WORKED, I’m so relived to have a working toilet again, thanks for this great method :)
Its amazing how that mop method is working to unblock the toilet….its real and working first.
Thanks alot It worked! I used elastic bands as I couldn’t find any cable ties. It worked after a few plunges .
Wow, I was just about to get my hands dirty and came upon this page. It worked like a dream (a couple of brown ones came up for air and then they were gone) Fantastic, thanks very muchly.
Brilliant , had been up all night trying to unblock my toilet which seemed to be clogged with toilet tissue but too far back to clear. Thought i was going to have to phone a plumber. Last resort was google , found this page , tried the mop and plastic bag tip. Used electrical tape to attach the bag, worked brilliantly after 3 attempts at plunging, woo hoo, happy bunny , thank you.
I was sceptical when I read about the mop and carrier bag method, and thought I might be better to buy a specialist toilet plunger. Having tried chemicals and broom handles on the 3-day blockage in my toilet, however, I decided to try your idea with the old mop and two supermarket carrier bags. The nasty water was right up to the rim, so I was very careful with my first few plunges in case I flooded the bathroom with poo. It only took a few plunges before the blockage cleared and the toilet was back to normal. Whoo-hoo!!! Who thought of this idea? You ought to patent it and manufacture cheap disposable toilet unblockers. Seriously.
Fantastic tip. Very Helpful. Cleared in minutes after two days of smelliness. Saved the plumbing bill. Fab !
It worked! Toilet blocked for nearly a week and no help from DIY stores. Used this method and after a few goes(I don’t think I was doing it right initially), the toilet was unblocked. Brilliant advice, thank you.
OMG… I was so sceptical to begin with!!! Was prepared to chuck every chemical I had down the offending loo until I stumbled across this method. As a single mum, calling a plumber was really not an option. It literally took me 5 seconds with an old mop and garbage bag and hey presto a beautiful unblocked toilet was revealed. Will be passing this little beauty on to all my friends. THANK YOU!!!!
Amazing! Thx so much saved us a pretty penny as was verging on a plumbers call out!
GENIUS!!!!! Worked first time. You saved my life, not to mention lots of money. THANK YOU!
Awesome! Been struggling with my blocked loo for two days. Bank holiday weekend so figured plumber would be expensive. Tried your tip and after a few goes the blockage was cleared. (I even think it drains faster than before.) Thanks.
Carrier Bag on a mop! Gave it a try with nothing to lose. Tried boiling water, drain unblocker, long wire previously. We were amazed and delighted! We really did think a plumber was the next step.
Bank holiday Monday!!!! Blocked loo, what am I going to do? Thankfully I found this website and so grateful too. Mop method worked first time . As a single person I will definitely be consulting this website again. Thanks so much
Fantastic! Worked straight away on a blocked toilet that didn’t even drain overnight.
Fantastic! My husband tried conventional way for 2 hours last night. I found your suggestion – problem solved in seconds. One up to wifey!
Hi – my husband dropped the harpic toilet block in the loo and flushed it. He had no luck finding it with gloves on. Any suggestions please ?
tried just the mop – seems to have worked
Wow been trying everything just tried this and it’s worked straight away!!! X
Amazing! I just can’t believe it worked. So quick and easy. My life is forever-changed
Brilliant – carrier bag taped around mop plunged 3 or 4 times, cleared like a professional. Thank you!
Didn’t have a mop so I used the dogs sponge football in a bag , worked in 5 seconds
LEGEND. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!!! :D
Wicked!! Worked straight away, 10 seconds was all gone!
It worked. Amazing. Thank you very much for that simple advice.
Yep ! It works ! I didn’t even have a mop, so just threw a bunch of old cleaning cloths into a plastic bag (actually I doubled the bags up) and taped it onto an old broom handle – literally one (careful and slow !!) push and the water level dropped and the toilet was cleared !!!! Great tip.
Awesome tip, dreaded unblocking the toilet, which my 6yr old daughter had blocked but this was so easy. Thank you ??
Worked on mu blocked toilet for ages. My daughter got on google. Come across this. Totally surprised at how quick this cleared the blockage. Thankyou
Fantastic, saved me buying rods.Tried to unblock for 3 hours your idea worked in mins. Thank you so much.
Amazing how effective the mop and plastic work. Brilliant and thank you for saving me the cost of a plumber
OMG!! I never thought it would work, but cleared the blockage first time!! Thank you so much!
Amazing ! So thankful – really could not afford a plumber ! I put down a few kettles of boiling water first – with a bit of harmless skin safe disinfectant to reduce germs and a very small squeeze of shower gel to help dissolve the blocked tissue – and left for an hour or so – two or three plunges with the mop – totally clear – absolutely amazing – thank you ??
Used the mop, poured down boiling water and used the mop again, hey presto blockage sorted
Like it says on the tin. Worked 1st time. Just 1 plunge & 1 flush & it was gone. Sure a plumber would have made a song and dance about the blockage & charged a fortune
Guttered! Hasn’t worked. My son put the cardboard tube from loo roll and a load of toilet paper down. Half an hour with mop and boiling water and no joy ?? soaked myself and the bathroom too! Back to the drawing board.
we had a blocked toilet for two days I tried everything chemicals no good I was looking for a phone number for a plumber when I came across your page I tried the mop and plastic bag great job worked first time. Thank you so much.
Wow. Great tip. Worked first time. I will never use quilted toilet paper again.
Nice one! I’m actually a seasoned maintenance specialist but had never tried this method. I was ramping up for a bottle of one shot before I saw this. Used gaffer tape to secure the bag and it took a good 5 minutes but also did the job in a controlled manner and didn’t make any mess around or outside the pan. You learn something new every day and this one is one for the book.
Fantastically simple tip!! Worked brilliantly. Thanks!!
Yay!!! Mop and plastic bag Worked first time after spending a good couple hours chucking all sorts of chemicals endless buckets of boiling water before I found this site!
Worked on the first plunge. Thank you soo much.
omg!!!! Spend two days plunging using chemicals. Read this and didn’t see how it would work! Worked first time! Best tip ever!!!
I am a single parent and also blind. My toilet was so blocked after my young child filled it with baby wipes. We had a bath room full of water it was blocked so much. I found this site used mop and bucket it worked first time I was so amazed. I am so happy it worked thank you so much
We have company coming for tea and I could not get anything to unblock the toilet – having tried a few. Just turned to this site out of curiosity and thought – why not! Give it a go. It took me all of 6 minutes. 5 minutes to find the mop and good plastic bag, then seal it up and just 1 minute (if that) to unblock the toilet. Boy was I chuffed. So was the wife. Phew!! Company – no problem – now. Thank you very much.
Having spent most of day pouring bleach and drain cleaner down pan I finally resorted to the net. I can only say I shall be recommending this to everyone! Worked perfectly! Blockage dealt with in under a minute. Brilliant! :)
the mop worked. one happy person.
Ive been trying different things for the past 2 hours and nothing finally ive found this website and after a minute my toilet was unblocked.
Excellent advice. Worked after a couple of vigorous plunges. So simple, so swift and so much cheaper than a plumber. Thank you so much for being there.
I had been trying to unblock toilet all day i saw this tip so I tried it your a life saver it worked straightaway thank you so much well happy ?
Bloody brilliant! Toilet was unblocked in less than five seconds.. I lost the mop head temporarily due to fast and furious plunging but it was easily salvageable and we now have a nice unblocked sparkling white toilet again – thank you! ??
Cant believe it after reading some of the comments i decided to have a go .. Toilet was blocked for hours tried other methods without success.. Within seconds my toilet was unblocked could not believe it .. Thank you so much
Can’t believe it! I tried lots of different methods, a toilet auger, sulphuric acid, wires, plunger. Decided to give this a go through desperation before calling in professionals and the toilet is now unblocked! I can’t say it was solely the mop, more of a combination of tools but the mop made the difference. It pulled stuff up that wasn’t moving before (gross) so it definitely was the thing that dislodged the blockage. Don’t give up, it will work! Thanks you so much, just saved me a fortune!
What a ripper. Thanks for a quick fix. Best free advice I ever got!
Wow, just been saved by this article. Had a blocked toilet for over 2 days. Just read this article, and my toilet was unblocked in less than 2 seconds! Thanks very much.
Worked first time! Best tip ever! Thank you. No plumber charge here :-)
Was trying everything to unblock the loo for almost a whole day and was just about to call a plumber. Thank god the fella wouldnt let me!! I jokingly said shall i ask google, i found this tip and AND IT BLOODY WORKS!!!!!! Thank you sooo much, you have just saved me a fortune
Blocked toilet for two days, my friend is a Plummer and even too embarrassed to call him….I found this web site and thought I’d give it a go, wow!! as soon as the mop touched the bottom of the pan the blockage was gone, thank you so much .
My toilet is blocked but there’s no waste in the pan. When you flush, the water takes ages to go down. I haven’t tried the mop method and I decided that the blockage must be outside but the drain inspection cover is made of concrete approx. 12″ round with a small bar going across the middle. Does this lift up or does it unscrew? I tried to lift but it’s too heavy.
With a bit of help, the concrete block lifted off. Then after turning on every tap in the house and leaving for a couple of minutes, the blockage was washed through. Problem sorted!
wife was sceptical after our loo became blocked with kids using a full loo roll to wipe themselves.showed her the video on youtube .and armed with a mop and a bag two minutes later the blockage was away amazing she said . thanks
Couldn’t believe it when the mop and bag tip worked?? thank you for sharing this wonderful trick ??
After trying everything i used the mop trick & amazingly it worked straight away took about 2 seconds!!!! Brilliant saved me calling a plumber
Went to the loo early hours to discover kids had blocked it spent 2 hours prodding with poles gave up and went to bed i then searched online found you and you then saved me god knows how much money, to be honest i did not think it would work but i was desperate so gave it a go its gone 4am but i am soooo happy thanks??
A simple and effective method. Worked first time despite our odd shaped toilet and U-bend. Great advice guys.
Glad to see this process is still working for so many of you. It’s so simple and yet continues to be so effective.
Never one to comment but this actually works!! Walked 3 miles and back to get mr muscle unblocker which made the problem worse not better! Shoved the mop down a couple times and it was done! Relieved is an understatement!!!
Easy-peasy, excellent free advice, job done and was so pleased I felt up to the challenge of dealing with BT customer service. Page now bookmarked for any future problems.
The mop works amazingly! Just keep plunging and it will suddenly unblock! Thank you for the advice!
Always glad to hear this method is still working for our readers!
last time cost me 100 pounds to bring in plummer, took 10 mins start to finish cost 1 black bag thank you
Was very sceptical this was going to work but it did,! I used the loo brush in a bag and after a couple of plunges a unblocked loo, great tip!
Massive thank you. Have tried everything to unlock toilet with no success. 30 sec fix using the mop.
Great job done Shhhhhhhh Mrs thinks I’m super clever Worked first time
THANK YOU – so much for posting. I am so so grateful. I have been plunging and chucking hot water down for past 2 days and this is the only thing that has worked. I had to give it a bit of welly but it shifted after few mins. THANK YOU FOR POSTING
Get phone call at work to say toilet blocked, come home when finished looked on internet and found this solution brilliant only took a couple of seconds to clear they were trying for 3 hours thanks
Amazin!! Thought i would have to call out a plumber tried this and worked first time thank you z
Just tried the mop and bag technique to unblock the toilet and it worked straight away. A brilliant and cheap way to unblock ur toilets. Thanx so much :-)
Wonderful, spent loads on chemicals and nothing worked and this worked in less than 5 minutes. Thank goodness for this site!!
Brilliant!!! Toilet looked nearly full and wasn’t draining. Went to nearest shop and they didn’t have any poles….plenty of replacement heads but no poles. Tracked down el cheapo mop £2 and hotfooted it back. Decanted excess water, agitated the mop a little, forcing it down into the pan a little, job done in 5 seconds!!
First time I’ve ever left a comment on anything online but felt you deserved the feedback. I’m always the one who has to try & fix things in this house, including blocked toilets. Last time after of hours of effort it cleared just as I was about to call a plumber. Spotted your idea of the mop & was about to duck out to buy one when I saw Deb had used her toilet brush wrapped in a bag. Great success, thank you! Our toilet is new & dual flush with low litres per flush to conserve water which is a necessity in Australia. Probably makes us more prone to blockages though! Very grateful, thanks again ??
You’re welcome and I’m glad it has reached the other side of the world too!
Tried the method with the mop for my toilet it worked so happy thank you from a very embarrassed mother ??
Having spent the best part of the morning trying to unblock the loo with my usual tool – a wire coathanger which has been successfull in the past, I was in a state of panic! Finding your simple mop in a bag technique – which is sheer genius!! – was an absolute godsend!!!!! THANK YOU THANKYOU THANKYOU!!!
You are amazing ! When my toilet became blocked this morning, as an O.A.P. living alone I thought I was faced with an embarrassing & expensive plumbing job after trying everything inc. caustic soda I gave myself one last chance and thought of the net and thanks to you I have now got a clear toilet. Like some other person it didn’t work the 1st time, I tried again and what a relief. !!
Today this blog saved me as well….The picture illustration works as well. ….thanks for sharing the brilliant tip….
I was very skeptical, but i work great. Thanks
It worked perfect saved money thank you very much
Works Perfectly as said! You can even use a small sized mop. The point is, it has to provide the mass to fill the plastic bag to act like a plunger. Thanks for this info!
Wow that was amazing! Had a blocked loo for last few days and before I called a plumber thought I would have a go at this. Was very sceptical but it worked after just a couple of plunges. Thank you very much for this advice.
Never bothered to leave a comment on anything but as this is such a horrifying matter and I was saved by this page so I wanted to show my appreciation, thank you.
It is awful when you have a problem and your heart sinks thinking you may have to get a plumber out, and how much it is going to cost. But great when you can do something that costs nothing and works. Glad it has helped.
Was in a panic until j came across this post Didn’t think it would work but it did amazing :)
Thank You Thank You Thank You!!!! Had tried everything was at the point of phoning my estranged husband and eating humble pie to ask for his help when I found this site. Got mop, bag and hey presto blockage clear. I feel empowered (know that sounds silly but it’s true)
Amazing! Been stressing the last 48 hours trying everything….. This has worked straight off! So impressed. Thank you
Worked a treat. Just jammed the mop in a bag into the ubend to make a seal then plunged hard for a few seconds. Cleared blockage! Thanks!!!
Again, first time I’ve ever left a comment…absolutely fantastic and worked really quickly. I’m single and with limited funds so I have to do everything myself and when my loo got blocked, I was worried I couldnt afford a plumber, however, after reading your advice, it was great…well wonderful that it worked. Brilliant advice which I will pass on to my friends. Thanks
Hey presto, several hearty plunges with the co-op bag for life wrapped around the mop and were clean as a whistle – new house tight plumbing cant cope with a protein heavy diet! Great tip – thanks??
Worked first time around!!! Cannot believe I managed were my hubby didn’t !!!
Glad it’s worked a treat. Another happy reader!
Wow Something so simple worked with 5 good plunges where chemicals and flexi rod failed.. Thank you…..
I spent and hour and a half trying to unblock my toilet this evening with a plunger and anything else I could get my hands on. I was just about to get an emergency plumber when I decided to turn to the internet. In one minute after trying this tip the toilet was completely unblocked! Extremely grateful, thank you. Another small tip from me is to make sure the bag goes quite far down. Thanks again.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I’ve just spent almost three days trying to unblock an easily blocked (wish I’d known!) septic tank toilet in a holiday cottage I’m staying at and desperately trying not to involve the owners and tried almost every trick in the book except a snake. Tried hot water, washing up liquid, soda crystals, coat hanger and even a plunger (albeit sink cup style as that’s all they had in the very remote store around here) which split easily. The mop and bag was my last resort and it worked in literally seconds!! Wish I’d tried it to begin with. Thank you so much again.
Thanks for your comment and your tip. Glad it worked.
tried everything and couldn’t unblock toilet, then looked on Internet for tips, amazed this worked first time. Thank you
My toilet was blocked and I have tried everything then I looked on the Internet and found this site. Brilliant…… Thank you. Worked first time.
Hi my new dual flush toilet is months old, when I flush it water rises in the pan then goes down, solids never flush down may take several flushes.i have checked the area under the rim and have altered the flush power . I’m really struggling now for ideas.
omg thank you im so glad it worked
I really didn’t think this was going to work, but I gave it a go and I’m so glad I did, it worked in about 10 seconds.
Glad it worked for you. It has saved a lot of people, a lot of money, due to the fact it is such an easy to follow and very effective tip.
Spent a good hour trying to unblock my toilet this morning! Tried bleach and a coat hanger and had no luck. My boyfriend sent me this link and I got to work straight away, after a few plunges it worked :)
Omg my toilet was badly blocked I tried all sorts and was about to call a plumber but was a bit embarrassed it was a right mess….tried this and took one plunge and it is completely gone!! Flushing as normal again!!! Absolute genius!!!
Wow what a great idea only I didn’t have one of those mops and it was late so I couldn’t go and buy one so I decided to use a rounded cobweb broom. I wrapped an old towel around it, tied with tape then put plastic bags over it and used the same method and it worked as well. Thank you so much for the idea, the toilet is back to normal and spotless. You guys are awesome for sharing this with everyone. THANK YOU again
You’re welcome – glad it worked!
Don’t need a man to do this job. You can be a handy-lady instead! So thankful to this site. Took 5 mins & job done. THANK YOU!!
Amazing took 2-3 goes then clear as a bell! Thankyou
Fantastic! After blocking my lav with a record breaking mother load i tried this technique and it worked a treat! Thank you for saving me a plumbing bill.
This worked in about 5 seconds!! We couldn’t believe it. Thank you!
Glad it helped you and with a speedy result.
Mop method worked first time! Great help
thank you so much for this tip, it really does work. It did take a good 15 minutes of vigorous plunging, but eventually there was an almightly gurgle and hey presto it worked!!
Pure legend!!! God I’m proud!! Who needs a man ey!!!! ;P
Absolutely brilliant. Thank you so much
2 days of a block toilet. Use this once and worked. Great advice
Wow I’m so amazed, it took just 10 plunges and the block was totally cleared, thank you so much God bless you.
Glad you managed to do the job without having to pay a plumber.
Glad it helped!
too much clumping cat litter sand in your toilet? get a mop and a plastic bag and you sorted!! Thanks guys.
Amazing!!! Sooo glad this worked… Initially tried thick bleach and loads of it!! Nothing happened! Gave this a go and in less than ten seconds it worked. Thanks for the tip!
I am gald this has worked for you. But cat latter down the loo is a real no, no, as not only will your toilet be blocked, but it will eventually block your drains too and there is no easy cure for that, only an expensive one! Put your cat litter in the bin and save the expense.
Came across this site when I had my blocked toilet, it was so bad I was so stressed. I came across this and attempted to unblock this way and it worked a treat. I’m so glad I seen this. Thank you so much. What a god send this was!!
Always good to hear it’s worked!
THANK YOU!!!! Worked quickly and I can go to the loo and not worry about a flood.
Love you!!! Mop method worked perfectly :)
Glad it worked and you could arise in the morning to a fresh new loo!
OMG!!! I can’t believed this worked! I’d been trying hot & washing liquid/shampoo (saw on another site), which didn’t work, apart from making the toilet smell nice, then came across this one. I now don’t have to get a plumber or cancel my arrangements for today. Thank you so much, I’m now off to bed it’s 2.30am zzz
Spent an hour with a wire trying to clear the toilet. Found this on the Internet and used the old cobweb brush and towel idea. Worked first time – amazing!!
Oh my God! This really works. My toilet had been blocked for days. I’ve used all kinds of stuff! I were about to by a Rod, until I read this tip. Thank you do much.
Spent £18 on unblocking products that didn’t work! Did all the usual things flushing hot water etc. & after 24 hours of the toilet almost spilling over after every flush I came across this! Used 1 bag tied it round the mop it honestly took no more than 2 minutes! Thanks so much for the tip!
I was getting desperate when I read about the bag and mop solution, having spent hours flushing and prodding. It worked. I will tell everyone! Thanks
this tip was a godsend! i’m stuck at home with a vomiting bug and my toilet got blocked..disaster untill i came across this tip.worked in minutes and saved me a lot of distress, thankyou :-)
Nearly had to phone a professional out, as we felt as though we weren’t get anywhere toilet was still blocked after using a conventional plunger and toilet brush. We typed How to unblock your toilet into the Google search engine and this site came up so we decided to give a try, would definitely recommend it to a friend thank you
You’re welcome. Glad it worked and hope you are feeling better.
Brilliant, used a whole 1L of One stop at the w/e and didn’t work, bought the mop for £4.50 and worked in about 20 secs. You are a genius, thank you so much for your tip
I have never, ever left a comment online before, but after a day of pain, frustration and nearly puking due to jamming a dirty, blocked toilet with coat hangers and all sorts, I found your handy tip and felt compelled to write. MAN ALIVE, IT WORKS IN FIVE SECONDS! Amazeballs, I am beyond impressed and no longer am looking at a pan filled with bits of … Thank you.
My toilet was blocked for two days, and I did EVERYTHING to try to unblock it, but to no avail. Then I came across this site. First I thought it was a scam, but I was getting desperate, so I tried it. MY TOILET WAS UNBLOCKED IN 4 OR 5 TRIES!!! I”M SO HAPPY RIGHT NOW!!! !!!!!!!! !!!! :D
Absolutely excellent advice. One mop and plastic bag cleared what had already taken hours of hopeless prodding with a wire, in 30 seconds!
We are glad you managed to solve the problem and so quickly.
Just tried it, our upstairs toilet was clean, but was blocked for days waiting for the chemicals to work, tried this and the blockage was gone in about 10/15 vigorous plunges. BRILLIANT Thanks
Blocked toilet horror. Tried the mop and it was fantastic. Took a few goes but worked. So pleased will pass this on
For 2 hrs I tried to unblock my toilet and I tried the plunger nothing then 1 cup of baking soda 2 cups of vinegar and still nothing still blocked then I find this page and I got my mop 2 plastic shopping bags and sticky tape and pump once and then twice and unblocked so yeah this works wow i should of done this earlier… I was nearly going to ring my landlord thank god I didnt… Again Thanks for the advice it worked!!!!!xoxoxo
Will this work with a broken piece of glass stuck in the toilet
Amazing, worked with the first plunge.
I couldnt figure out how it would work first..then i got it…U have to use it in a way that it creates a vacuum. .you get the feeling like it’s being sucked in to d Ubend..then pull it out sharply when you feel resisted ..do that a few times..flush and do again with d bowl quite full..the watwr should go down..hey presto..it’s fixed!
I’ve never written a review before, but I was so impressed with this that I just had to. Two weeks ago, after a surf and turf night, my 17 year old son, a 14 stone flanker with a massive appetite for steak left the downstairs toilet blocked. After using a variety of bucket flushes, chemical treatments, and assaults on the u-bend with an unravelled wire coat hanger, nothing would shift the blockage. The pan looked like the set of Trainspotting. I accidentally typed in the search on google rather than on YouTube and came across this. After twenty seconds locating a cable tie, and one of Wor Lass’s heavier plastic bags, the “super-plunger” did the trick on the second push. Thanks so much. Now the quandary is whether I take this bag for life back to Sainsburys and ask them to exchange it, as it has begun to smell funny….
I thought this stood no chance, but three pushes and toilet clear! Thank you!
Brilliant. Worked a dream. Worth wasting a mop and a plaggy bag definitely! Duct tape works well to fasten the bag on.
Thank you so much for sharing this tip with us! It worked as magic! So much more easier and economic comparing to all the products we’ve tried! Potentially saved us loads of money for a emergency call out of a plumber!
Thanks for the added advice. Glad it worked.
What can I say!! After spending a couple of hours at the weekend trying to unblock our toilet with chemicals and an auger to no avail. I thought my only option was to remove the toilet. That was until I read your article and hey presto, second plunge and problem solved,. Thankyou soooooo much
Another success – we’re glad it worked.
At 65 and a life long DIYer, I’ve never had a blocked toilet to deal with and was a bit flummoxed by the challenge. Found this and got an easy “result”. Thanks for showing me, we really are never too old to learn.
This was a golden advice. It worked very well in the first go. Thank you very much!
You’re welcome. We are happy you decided to tackle the challenge yourself and it paid off.
excellent advice. worked first time, 2 min job and the misses was already starting to think ‘ we’ll have to get a plumber in’ woo hoo!!!
Quite simply a legend! Thank you!
Another satisfied reader! Glad it worked.
I’ve tried everything in the past 2 hrs 2 unblock my toilet n nothing was workin, type into intenet n found this page in OMG I laughed when I read it but thought hey ho give anything a try n wow it honestly worked
Can’t believe this worked. Saved me £75 plumber call out fee and no chemicals! Great tip about double-bagging. Mop still dry and clean. This has been a lifesaver!
Glad it worked. As you can see we have a lot of satisfied readers with this method.
Fantastic. Tried everything else. This worked first time!
Tried all the usual approaches with limited success. The plastic bag technique when combined with a bowl of hot water and a toilet flush worked a treat. Great idea.
Abosualt brilliant idea. My family laught at me when I suggested it but it really does work. Thanks.
Genius! I think there should be an internet public service award!! It took about 10 goes but then there was a big glug and a bowl full of pooey water disappeared. I’m so relieved I didn’t have to call out a plumber.
Pure genius, thanks a million you guys are totally brilliant. Keep up the good work. And for those of you who think this method won’t work, just wait till you try it. WOOOOOHHOOOOO!!!! I can unblock my stomach ache now
I didn’t believe for a minute this would work but I don’t like using harmful chemicals so i thought I’d give it a go and it was sorted in 2 goes. Feeling SMUG :D
Whoever thought of this is a genius
Oh my God, this really works! Tried everything, unwound wire coat hanger down there and all sorts. Then I googled it and came across this, fixed in less that 2 mins and that included finding my mop! Thank you
It works!!!!! Hurrah- what a relief. My added top tip is I used a bin bag and held it up on handle ie no cable ties. Less hassle and mop stayed completely free of loo germs.
I have been doing this for years ( having found it on the internet first) and it’s always worked for me too. I now have an blocked outside kitchen drain. Any reason I shouldn’t use it there too? I’m thinking if giving it a go
Great extra tip, thanks – and we’re pleased it worked for you.
Whoever came up with this is truly genius, I’ve tried all the usual techniques but nothing worked, as luck would have it, I stumbled upon this page but didn’t expect it to work at all then once I tried it, it simply blew me away, wow a big thank you for your information.
Many thanks over and over again for this great tip I was up till two o, clock this morning trying to un block the toilet, first with the loo brush then with baking powder and vinegar, no success, then with baking powder, vinegar and boiling water and still no success, this has been going on all day . then out of desperation I looked at the computer again and it was wonderful to find this great tip Never again will I put ex husbands nasty letter down the pan again as this is what blocked it up Many Many thanks again lightening
Took me longer to tie the bag on the mop ,than it did to unblock the toilet, worked after one plunge, thanks what a result.
Wow… Truely universal!! Used this trick in Thailand after most of a whole toilet roll was put down and blocked it. Will remember this trick forever now… Thank you so much
Amazing tip, thanks! Internet search was a last resort before calling a plumber, cost me a couple of pounds for as mop and worked a dream. Thanks again
48 hours of a grim looking loo!! tried all sorts.. With nothing left to lose I looked for alternative solutions!! Im amazed.. 2 quick shakes of the mop and ta da!!!! Thank you! Thank you
You’re welcome. We’re happy you didn’t have to get a plumber out in the run up to Christmas.
Oh wow!..it’s true – it really does work. Never had to deal with this before but with family home for Christmas the poor loo has been very busy. As a middle aged Mum…..I am now the heroine of the hour! (rightly so, eh?)
Fabulous news – a backed-up loo is the last thing you want to happen over Christmas. Have a merry one.
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You! Christmas Night of all times and no, we have not eaten the Turkey yet ;) Worked brilliantly .. couldn’t be happier and yep, feeling quite chuffed with myself that I fixed it .. well technically you fixed it .. I was just the apprentice ;) Thanks again and a very Merry Christmas!
Use a hose to siphon it out? So how exactly does that work then? The water wont just automatically travel UP the hosepipe. Oh so you put the hose in and suck to get it started. And remember what’s down there. Yeah sure.
Unfortunately this has not helped at all. The bottom floor loo is the only one my husband is able to get to as he’s just come home from hospital, and I can’t get hold of anyone to come out and help at all . . . not sure what my husbands supposed to do now! ??
Just home from Christmas and deposited an epic Christmas poop, and dreading having to get the toilet fixed Boxing day night, but found this article and it worked perfectly! Thank you!
How clever! Can’t believe this worked. Am thrilled as the plumber wanted to charge me £200 as its the Xmas / New Year. Thank you so much :-)
fanstatic been scoping turds al morning best xmas precent
Works wonders I hesitated at first waiting on the water to magically go down by itself. I’m so glad I found this website useful.
My son had his arm down the toilet pan for an hour and it would not unblock. Quick check on the net and ive come across this page. Tape a couple of bags to the mop, four or five plunges later an hey presto, the toilet is unblocked. Can’t believe it was that easy. My son was not happy. Why didn’t i check the net first? Happy days.
After struggling for several hours using boiling water, chemicals and a brush. We tried the mop-in-a-bag method……Brilliant!! It cleared the blockage easily, I wish we had known about it before. When all the family are home and feasting in the future we will be prepared!! Thank you so much ??
Thank you so much!! It worked in seconds. I had tried mixing caustic soda with water previously to no avail. Three cheers for the Internet! Happy new year to you.
Thank goodness for this page. Worked like a charm.
Tried expensive toilet unblocker, didn’t work, was going to phone plumber and decided to look online, thank goodness I seen this site, worked a treat who would have thought about taping carrier bag on to mop, saved me a packet espically happening on New Year’s Day, Thanks.
Massive thank you for going to the trouble of informing all of us poor people, desperate to rid ourselves of blocked toilet misery!! My husband is particularly happy with this brilliant and FREE solution, as he’s not had to get his hands dirty!! You are my new favourite internet friends!
Brilliant worked first time Thanks a lot
Brilliant! Worked brilliantly! I was ready to call a plumber! Discovered the culprit – Christmas themed loo roll, don’t use it!!!! ??
Worked great, took about 10mins of trying and I was just getting to point of giving up, then hey presto it worked. Thank you so much.
OMG. Cannot believe it! Tried all the usual tricks, washing up liquid, hot water, plungers etc., You could hear the blockage gurgle straight away and cleared completely after three goes. Amazing!! and thank you
Thank you. You just saved me £100. I had tried everything, I guess my plunger wasn’t creating a proper seal. The mop did the job in no time.
Well, I’ll be blown.. This works!!! Tried for hours before looking on the Internet for methods. Followed the very simple instructions and in less than 5 seconds gone!!! Thank you so much. My wife thinks I’m a hero now lol
Glad this worked for you. The last thing you needed is a plumbing bill after Christmas and New Year!
Brilliant!!!!!!. Spent an hour with drain rods and wire coat hanger and rubber gloves fishing around in toilet bowl – very unpleasant and totally ineffective. Followed your advice and mop plunger cleared the blockage in less than 5 minutes!! Thanks so much.
Greetings from Canada! Headline “Brit saves Canuck from loo poo disaster” I am truly amazed! Family member had a “poo” test to do which meant putting a sheet of thicker than TP paper over the loo water which, of course, caused a clog. Don’t have the $$ for a plumber so found this site. It took longer to gather the equipment than it did to unclog! I had no confidence in myself or the method but I sure do now! Thanks so much! :) I used zippy straps on the plastic bag which was very simple and effective.
Happy it worked for you!
WOW!!! After 2 days with a blocked loo (teenagers!) using wire coat hanger, rubber gloves and a toilet brush, nothing was shifting the blockage. Thought I’d check the internet before phoning a plumber and found this mop and bag idea. I double bagged and tied the bags tightly around the handle and then started plunging. It took 7-8 big plunges and then suddenly the ‘dirty’ water flowed away. Gave the toilet an apprehensive flush and it flowed perfectly. So chuffed that I did this myself and it was so easy. Thanks for the help. Will definitely share this tip with friends.
Over this last week we have tried lots of over the counter products and spent a small fortune to try and unblock our toilet.Nothing has worked. Rather than call out a plumber, my daughter looked on line. Oh glad I was !!! This certainly does work thanks for a great result. Thanks to our daughters great initiative.
Went to go and use the toilet and I found it blocked. Great. Went on Google to find out a way to unblock it and found this site. Grabbed a mop, tied two plastic bags around the mophead and hey presto 5 minutes later the toilet was unblocked. A big big thankyou.
Who would have thought a mop and carrier bag would solve a blocked toilet. Worked first time and so easy. Thank you so much.
It never fails to amaze and has saved our readers lots of money in plumbing fees. We are glad it worked.
I came across this website whilst looking up how to unblock my toilet which my lovely 4 year old had kindly done a number 2 in and then shoved countless amounts of toilet paper down. The smell was horrendous. I looked at this and thought I highly doubt it will work but read the comments and decided to try it and thank god I did. My toilet is finally unblocked. The smell is finally leaving the bathroom and we can all now use the toilet again. Definitely a remedy I will keep and pass on to many more people
How nice to get a great tip to help someone for free, when a lot of people nowadays want a quick buck. Your tip worked almost immediately. Thank you very much!
You’re more than welcome – we’re glad it saved you an expense.
This was so so grerat. Had tried everything & nothing worked. Boyfriend coming over later & couldn’t bear the though of him seeing this!!! Tried the mop technique and it worked first time. Phew what a relief. Thanks so much.
It really works!!! Thanks for your help. I was stuck with this problem for one day and it started to get on my nerves. I’m glad it works that’s why I leave a comment :)
Thanks! 2 kettles of boiling water worked for me!
Fantastic! Spent well over an hour trying to unblock my toilet. Nothing worked. Saw this site and I tried the mop and plastic bag method. Worked in 2 seconds and the toilet was clean. Do it and you will save time and money.
Tried everything and was getting quite worried to say the least, but by some amazing luck I found the web page and it took less than 2minutes. Brilliant. SAT
I cannot thank you enough for this tip! My toilet was blocked with poo, tried everything and nothing worked. I was getting very depressed and worried. Then I came on google for help and found this link. OMG!! It cleared up under 5 seconds. God bless you so much. I am so grateful. THANK YOU! I am telling the whole world about this. lol…..maybe not the whole world but everyone I know. Thanks again.
Wow!!!. I was just going to the shop to buy a plunger when I came across this website. I used the mop and a bag and unblocked the toilet in seconds. Amazing. Thank you !!!!
You are welcome, we’re glad it did the trick.
Amazing trick!! We were panicking; the situation was bad and we came across this advice on Internet. We thought it was worth giving it a go after having tried other things, unsuccessfully. Worked the first time. We couldn’t believe it! Thanks for the tip!
Having tried bleach and bicarbonate soda it seemed like the only way to unblock the toilet would be to call out a plumber until we came across this little diamond. Plastic bag and an old mop worked an absolute treat – toilet unblocked in a jiffy!!
Pleased it worked, sometimes the simplest methods are the best.
WORKED A TREAT After having a blocked upstairs toilet for 2 days it started to affect the downstairs toilet too so after assuming there was a blockage in the system somewhere and having tried everything else I came across this and it worked, it took 6 or 7 trys but I now have 2 clear toilets
Thank you !!!!!!! This worked first time, after trying everything else.Blockage was a long way down , and rods didn’t work. Thank you !!!!!!!
Thank you!!!!! After fighting with my toilet for the last few days. Using vinegar, bicarb soda, bottles of bleach and fairy, it is finally unblocked. With no energy and on the verge of tears I came back to google and found this. Worked first time!!! So relieved. Fab advice!
Great stuff, two for one! Happy it has worked for you.
thank you so so so much, took a few goes but it worked and im very thankful. not often you get tips for nothing that work! whoever dreamt this one up needs a medal! thanks once again to the plumbing angel,.
Can I just say a big thank you for this tip. I used hot water, many different liquids, augar and down on my knee’s using my hands. Then read this and it worked within minutes today. Thank you
I tried this mop and bag method and 10 seconds later gone perfect
I don’t have a regular mop, I use the flat sponge type, so I improvised by tying a small towel round the end of a broom handle and then fixing a bag round that.. and it WORKED!! Thank you very much for this brilliant idea, I’m so relieved that I didn’t have to call out a plumber on a Sunday!
I’m amazed. I tried everything then googled how to unblock a toilet and this came up. I thought, this won’t work but having no money for a plumber I gave it a go and it worked straight away. Fantastic.
All fixed first time :) last time this happed had to get a plumber saves money and time. Thank you
It’s amazing! My toilet was blocked for 3 days, I’ve tried everything and was going to call a plumber when I saw this page. It worked immediately! A massive thanks guys!
It’s always a plus to save on having to pay a plumber – glad it worked for you.
Thanks How To Unblock A Toilet Without roles tape
WOW – I had a blocked toilet for three days, it was the downstairs loo so and because we had another one, It took a while for me to get round to fixing it. I tried the bucket of water trick that so often worked but to no avail. I considered a plunger but the last one just wouldnt fit the toilet because of its small shaped bend. I came onto this webpage and decided to give the old mop/bag trick a go. I pushed the mop [with bag attached] down into the water and on the second plunge felt all the water disappear and guess what, problem solved. No more blockage. Thanks everyone
Brilliant! Tried to unblock the toilet various ways (including chemicals) but with no success. A couple of goes with the mop and bag and all’s well again. Thank you so much!!!
We are happy this method worked for you.
What a fantastic, yet simple and practical idea! You saved me a lot. Thanks.
We’re happy you got a result and it’s always nice to know we have saved people money.
Thanks so much for this! Top tip
I simply had to write something on here: after dealing with a horribly blocked toilet for the past few hours, leaving it, waking up the middle of the night feeling sick, and unable to use it, this trick cleared the blockage in no more than 15 seconds. And I’d been plunging away at it for over an hour in desperation with the toilet brush to no effect. At 2am on a Monday morning. Short of cable ties I used duct tape and it worked a treat. I simply cannot thank you enough. You guys are lifesavers. Thank you, so so much!
We’re pleased you got a good result and can once again sleep at night!
Perfect – simple and effective :-)
Wow! This is awesome. I tried this method tonight and it was a welcoming saviour.
WOW I actually can’t believe this worked I have no plunger so all day I’ve been going at a stinking blocked toilet with a wire coat hanger with no success I double bagged the mop and tied them both very tight I used the reusable ones you can buy and it worked with a few plunges in less that 20seconds I would have been mortified if I had to call a plumber in
JUS WANTED TO SAY A BIG THANK YOU I TRYED THE MOP METHOD .. AN IT – WORKED ,, I wud never have thought of that am I’m so pleased that you did an helped others ,, , iv had a plumer called the plumbers the first time my toilet blocked ,,I was so grateful I gave him the £50 he charged me ,, but after thinkin about the cost an the fact he was there for 1min , .., IT SEEMED A LOT OF MONEY FOR SOMETHING THAT SEEMED SO SIMPLY TO DO ,, I LOOKED UP THE TOOL PLUMBERS USE AN I WAS ABOUT TO BUY ONE , THEN I LOOKED UP ONLINE AN SEEN YOUR THEORY AN COPIED ,,,THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN ….
You’re welcome. I hope it manages to save you money in the future too, should it happen again.
This is a great tip – It worked! Mind my toilet was blocked with toilet paper though. Thanks very much for the advice :)
OMG it worked! Thanks soooo much!
Thank you so much…..first time to google such and I came across your tips. Was very helpful. I used one of the Asda bag for life and cut a string from an old Tee to tye the bag to the mop. On the Second attempt, I saw the great success. Thank you ????????????????
Fantastic – worked first time with 30 seconds. Great advice thank you.
It’s fab when you can achieve something for nothing, when it otherwise would have cost! Great result.
Why didn’t I try this first?! After trying and failing with washing up liquid and parting with £24 for ineffective conventional & concertina plungers, a £2 supermarket basic mop double-bagged with bin sacks worked first time. Plumber averted – I cannot recommend this simple method highly enough!
I had a 2-day blockage in my downstairs loo. I tried a plunger and it wasn’t working for some reason, perhaps because it didn’t fit that bowl’s shape well enough. Then I tried the mop and bag method – worked immediately! Thanks for the tip, I’ll remember that.
My youngest son always manages to block the toilet. He uses so much loo roll!!!! I always remembered my lovely matron auntie rolling up her sleeves an sorting the problems out. She is not with us now but I have just sat an thourght how I could sort out this toilet an it’s what she always did the mop an bag trick !! Brilliant I love my antie what a practical lady she was God bless her.
Fantastic advice worked straight away thank you ??
Glad it worked, and that you figuratively didn’t have to roll up your sleeves to sort out the problem!
Yeah it worked well took a bit of going at but my toilet is nice and unblocked now
Hi, tried the mop and bag technique, heard lots of gurgling however the level of dirty water is high in the toilets and takes all night to drain. When I flush in the morning both fill up again to the brim…. Any ideas? May need a plumber. The pipe outside seems to rise slightly as it joins a vertical pipe, am guessing the blockage is somewhere in the outside pipe.
This worked a treat. Particularly recommend tesco bag for life, could use the handles to tie it!! ??
I think in this case if the mop and bag is unfortunately not working, then you need to get someone in.
Wow it really does work!!! Blocked toilet for 3 days took me 5 seconds pumping mop up and down then Pow toilet unblocked!!!! Great Idea
I didn’t have a mop so I got thinking?! I ended up shoving 4 carrier bags into one really sturdy one and made a ‘ball of bags’! Holding onto the handles (now tied in a knot) one push and the blockage was cleared!!! Two days of blocked toilet, a lot of sweat, nearly tears and the awful smell and it was as easy as that to clear! Another tip, if the toilet is blocked and you have to leave it overnight, cover the toilet pan completely with cling film, at least the smell doesn’t get into the house! Thanx so much for the advice!!!!
Always good to have another satisfied customer.
Excellent info. Worked a treat within 2/3 mins with two plastic begs over a map!
Loo had been blocked for a couple of days. Tried bucket of water without success ??. Used the mop and plastic bag method, wow, how fantastic, worked in seconds. Brilliant thank you.
Thanks for the added clingfilm tip there. Glad the bag and mop worked for you.
Absolutely brilliant solution. Thank you!
This has to be the best invention EVER for unblocking toilets. I was 2 days of trying to unblock it but to no avail. I bought 2 plungers and chemicals but made it worse. So my final straw before getting a plumber in was the mop and bag….. Amazing.. Thanks for the input
Brilliant worked first time tried everything then seen this glad I didn’t have to pay for a plummer thankyou
Glad it worked for you!
Wow – how easy – i used my daughter’s hair band as couldn’t find any cable ties. It worked first time
I’ve just used this method worked first time brilliant .
I have just unblocked my toilet using the mop and bag method you described,it worked after 2 sharp thrusts……brilliant !!! I had being trying to unblock it with a bendy spring, for about an hour, but to no avail, then thought try the internet, and hey presto, saw your site, tried your method, and job done……thanks very much !!
You’re welcome – we’re happy it worked for you.
No other tip site has made me so happy. I actually love you. After almost a week of my poor 70 year old mum trying countless random bits of wire ( including my best bbq tongs which I set my pliers to work on) the only thing that moved was the lever of the poop filled water. Now so close to flooding my daughters en suit loo I had to be a grown up, forget that I had gag reflexes and admit that 2 bottles of neat corstic soda was not shifting this bad boy. I did wires, bendy pipe and a glove full of this welded in whatever. I decided to search and see I I could mix the chemicals I have around the house to make it explode, instead like an angel of the loo pan I found your tip. Finally my 2 hour ordeal was over. I ran to the garage and grabbed the mop, bag and found a jubilee clip to secure I zoomed back to the room of doom and followed your easy step guide and WOOSH the demons banished. Bleach, antibacterial cleaner and steamer in hand I erased all memories of the ordeal and found my new best site in the universe. Thank you with love.
We are glad to have made you and your 70 year old mum so very happy – long may it continue…
My toilet had been blocked for a day, tried unblocking it doing the usual things and nothing was unblocking it,so looked on line and clicked on this before calling plumber, and after a couple attempts it worked!. Thankyou you have saved me money for a plumber at no cost what so ever brilliant so pleased it worked. Thankyou.
Loo blocked for 3 days. Used this method and cleared in 8 seconds. Perfect!
I hope you are all feeling better and we are relieved it worked for you. There can be nothing worse that feeling ill and having to deal with a blocked loo.
Thank you so much! Best tip ever gained off Internet and sooo easy!! I’ve been off work sick, my husband started and then last night my teenage son. I think my poor loo just called ‘Time Out!’ So to wake up this morning, not feeling great, to be faced with a blocked loo… But then I found your page, with clear instructions and it was done in less than a minute!!!! FAB!!!!!!
Thank you! I woke up to find my toilet blocked in my flat in student housing, half asleep, desperate to pee and stuck with the knowledge that maintenance wouldn’t be able to attend to my dilemma until tomorrow I was stuck with an ever filling bladder and a never draining toilet. Thankfully I searched online and your simple method saved the day! It took a few tries but now is draining perfectly and I am so thrilled! Thank you for posting such a great method!! You’ve helped me gain such a valuable life skill!
We’re glad you managed to sort this issue out, both for yourself and the convenience of your other housemates.
So I have a problem with blocking toilets and when I blocked it this time, I was desperate to find a solution. After trying for over two hours I read the comments and the instructions on this site and BAM my toilet flushed with no problem.
Yes, this works! It took a good few plunges but we got there. I’d recommend using a good bin bag and some cable ties. As you take the bin bag off the mop afterwards, turn it inside out and you can pop it in the bin without being too icky. Cheers for the idea!
Wow unbelievable had to do I few times as was blocked really bad just wish I would have found this before spending a fortune on products that didn’t work THANKS ??
Thank heavrn for this page, i was bordering on calling a plumber n thought id try a web search first, with two young kids i have no time to spare and this tip worked within seconds. Thank you like many others for this handy trick. It has saved me so much time and money x
Glad it worked for you and in double-quick time.
What a relief, I tried nearly everything & was starting to wonder how much I was going to have ta spend on a plumber. Thanks so much!
Thank you so much, this really works!!! My five year old dropped his sun glasses off his head and down the pan as he was flushing the toilet. The toilet was well and truely blocked and it was taking hours for the water to go down even a little. Used the mop and plastic bag method with hot water with washing up liquid and washing powder in. In takes some perseverance but did work. Has saved me so much money!!!
Brilliant advice all the way to Ireland! Just finished unblocking my loo. I had to pop to Argos to buy a mop and had to give it a few goes before it worked. I used a cable tie to hold the bag in place. I flushed after each ‘plunge’ and the toilet filled up each time. I had to transfer the contents of the toilet to another toilet a few times before it cleared. A bit disgusting but beats paying for a plumber. I am hoping this is a job I do not have to do again any time soon. Thank you for great advice.
Great that you managed to sort the issue out, shame about the other mess; but sometimes you have to crack a few eggs to make an omlette, so they say!
wow great tip and a hugh success espically as I am having visitors later today for lunch how embarrassing if this had not worked on a sunday !! well done for a fe simple tips for a simple person!
OMG. Never expected this to work as husband has spent ages with a plunger and rods and had given up hope. Thought we’d give it a go before calling a plumber. Brilliant. Thanks so much
We’re very pleased it did the job and saved you the expense.
Didn’t think using a mop would help to unblock the toilet after trying many other diy methods on the Internet. But this actually works! Thank you
Amazing idea which worked a treat! Thank you!!
Brilliant! thought we were going to have to call out the plumber. Hunt for brown October was a success!
This method is such a miracle!!! I tried 3 times and this is just really effective!!!
toilet blocked saw this tried it …it done the job no need for plumber now will keep this idea in mind great ..
I just tried this at 1am after getting home from work worrying about whether I would have to phone a plumber. I went to the 24hr superstore and they didn’t have plungers and I saw this and gave it a go with lots of bleach, a steradant tablet and boiling hot water poured from height. My toilet is now clear happy days and no expensive plumber needed. Thankyou inventor of this trick
I’ve tried the bucket of water from height about 3 times with no success. Tried this and it is FANTASTIC. Whoever came up with this is my hero.
We’ve had a blocked toilet for 2 days and was just thinking about calling the plumber also when I decided to google blocked toilet and we’ve just tried the Mop with the plastic bag! Within 10 seconds I heard my husband shout with joy “it’s bloody worked!!” Thank you Thank you Thank you!!! Clean toilet again!!!!!!
We’re always glad when this has the desired effect and can save you money.
One of the grandchildren blocked the main toilet 4 days ago,not sure what with – tried conventional methods to shift it, all unsuccessful! One plunge of the bagged mop – worked instantly! THANK YOU!!
OMG! My daughter blocked her loo with face wipes! It’s truly the most revolting thing I have ever done, but a £3 mop beats the hell out of an out of hours plumber. LOL. Soooooo grateful. Ingenious.
We are glad it worked for you. Face wipes are one of the most frequent causes of blockages in toilets as they snag against pipes and a build up can ensue. I hope you have forbidden her to flush them down the loo any more.
This works!!! Absolutely brilliant idea!!! Saved a fortune and succeeded when we had tried everything else; hot water, rods, caustic soda etc… Thanks for the tip!!!!
Omg. It works. Was a bit dubious but one go with the mop and bag and blockage gone.
We are happy it worked for you.
My loo has been partly blocked for past 2 days, I tried wire coat hanger, bought some loo unblocker stuff but nothing worked, the water just kept rising. The time had come for me to stuff my hand up to my elbow in there, but there was nothing there!! Read your tip with the mop and I’ve just tried it. Absolutely brilliant. It works. Thankyou thankyou thankyou.??
Thankyou so much for this article. My toilet was blocked but I’ve fixed it now with this method…BRILLIANT !!! and I’ve posted it on Facebook. Thanks again.
Thanks for sharing and we are glad it helped.
Absolute godsend finding this page. It worked 1st time and saved me a lot of money having to call out a plumber! THANK YOU ??
Yay! My daughter had complained that her ensuite toilet was not working properly for a couple of weeks. I had tried bicarbonate of soda/vinegar/hot water (as we have a septic tank) and it helped but the toilet was still blocked. We were about to venture out to get an auger when I found this method. I armed myself with a strong bag tied with string to the mop. Much to my husband’s disbelief it worked! I have now crowed myself as an epic wife and feel pretty smug.
yes it worked, absolutely amazing way to unblock a toilet. thanks for the idea :)
Great – a high five and a 10/10 for you!
I was at my wits end with a blocked toilet for 2 days!!! I tried using a wire hanger, and pouring hot water from a height. Nothing budged. The water level just got higher! After reading this page, a light bulb went off in my head and I used an old plastic umbrella that was damaged, that I hadn’t thrown away yet. I wrapped the plastic round the base of the umbrella holder, in place of a mop covered in plastic bags. I used it to poke the toilet bowl twice, and to my amazement and sheer delight, it worked. I’ve never been so excited to see my toilet flush!! Thanks a million!
Thank goodness I read this, I’ve tried with a plunger and that didn’t work but this worked after about 5 times of trying
Glad you found the site and it worked.
This is simple and amazing trick helped me
It works! Day before going on holiday, worst blockage we’ve ever had. Bowls and kettles of water just making it worse. Looked on Internet for a plumber, saw your tip, tried it with instant success. Thank you very much!
Great! We hope you were able to enjoy your holiday more as a result.
Brilliant! My youngest son always used way too much toilet paper and regularly blocks the loo, really thought he had outdone himself this time and would have to get a plumber in. Found this site and it worked 1st time!! Thank you ??
Brilliant! My youngest son always used way too much toilet paper and regularly blocks the loo, really thought he had outdone himself this time and would have to get a plumber in. Found this site and it worked 1st time!! Thank you!!!
Fabulous! a few plunges and it was gone in seconds! thanks for the great tip!!
Wow!!! Never tried anything like that absolutely amazing!! Thanks for help :)
THANK YOU! I was in a huge state after my 4 year old blocked the toilet with tissue paper THEN went for a number 2, in desperation not to get elbow deep in muck I tried this and it worked straight away. Amazing trick, one to store in the memory bank! Incredibly grateful :)
We’re glad you have your loo back and working!
Great that it worked for you!
Oh my goodness me. My toilet decided to block up this morning and tried a few different things and then came across the mop and plastic bag trick. Well my mum was saying that’s not going to work and I’m like we’ll I’m trying it whether it works or not and wow it seriously works. First time and my toilet is flushing like it should. So happy. Thand you for the tips
We are happy it did the trick!
Brilliant after trying for 4 days it took 10 secs.using this tip.Fantastic result.
This is really worked. I don’t have a traditional mop so I unscrew the stick, wrap a heavy dishcloth and plastic bag around one end of the mop, gave this method a go and it worked first time. Thank you!!
Worked a treat! *panic over* – The best part is, my favorite shopping bag remains usable after a quick rinse! (I’m kidding about the last bit) ;-)
My loo has been blocked for 2 days due to putting kitchen roll and baby wipes down after cleaning up after our baby duck . Tried various products and none worked tried the mop head with bag on and straight away cleared it . Absolutely genius thank you
You’re welcome – there is nothing worse than a baby wipe for blocking a loo – we’re glad you managed to sort it out.
Thank you! Thank you! It worked. Was getting desperate after a guest blocked our guest loo and it was stubbornly not clearing. Tried everything and then found this. Immediate success! So grateful.
Thank you, I was having a nightmare, it worked !!!!!.
Simple but very effective! Thanks so much!
We’re always happy it’s helped someone out of a mess.
AMAZING!! So so grateful. The wire coat hanger method was making it worse. But the mop in a bag did the trick. It took a few goes, but eventually glugged away beautifully! My friend and I were jumping up and down cheering! We are in a very remote part of the Scottish Highlands and getting a plumber is hard. But no need now. THANK YOU!
Just used mop and a bag for life worked first time than ??
We’re really glad it worked for you up there in Scotland.
I half laughed at this and then in desperation tried it. Laughed with pleasure then and delight. Thank you.
We are happy it worked!
After getting frustrated trying a number of solutions I searched online. Did as instructed and whoosh, a clear loo! Does that officially make me a plumber? Thanks
Yes, you and every other person this has worked for :) We are pleased you’ve been able to sort out your problem.
Had given up hope til I tried the mop. Amazing
OMG… The unconventional method REALLY works a treat ! Read the blurb, assembled the “mop plunger”, did the job and back on the settee in 5 mins literally. Thank you !!!!!
My husband and I spent the last hour trying to unblock the toilet. I tried all the tips that I found on the Internet none work until I found this site. I tried the mop and bag trick and it worked first time. A big thank you.
You’re welcome! Happy it did the trick.
Oh wow I’ve spent half the morning despairing trying all sorts of methods resulting in water reaching the top of the bowl! ! Decided to look for help this was the second site. I used a really thick black bin liner and gaffer tape it took about 3 seconds ! And was clear thank you so much I love the old mop and bag method.! !
This really worked! Took seconds and toilet unblocked! Thank you so much,
Big thumbs up from us here!
Daughter had a blocked loo and a flooded bathroom, she tried everything, we came over & then found your site and it worked!! Thank you.
Tried everything, coat hangers, bleach, stick, hot water and nothing. Then mop and bag, inserted mop head (in bag) and created a vacuum over hole and a few up and down motions it cleared. 2 days of blocked toilet (been busy) and was about to ring plumber! Great job.
We’re glad it worked and saved you a plumber.
Yes it worked so happy, knew it was blocked because I used baby wipes, So glad I did not need to call my Landlord for a plummer, would have been embarrassing.
We are glad it worked for you. But as a note of caution, there is nothing worse for blocking a loo and drains than baby wipes. Baby wipes can snag on the joints of the drains and can cause a serious blockage. This is also very expensive to treat, as drain experts have to try and locate the blockage from above ground. Therefore, please avoid putting baby wipes down your loo, as next time you may have a much bigger problem and a large bill. I hope this helps.
I did all the recommended things- hot water, soap, unblocking fluid- when I really wanted to stay Eco :( . My friend even lent me her bendy coil rod- nothing. Then I saw this, bought a mop and it was done in minutes! Thanks for the tip!
So wish I’d found this before spending loads of money on drain unblockers-this tip is amazing works brilliantly! Big thanks!
Very satisfying to have a simple method that worked immediately. I am going to share this tip with my children especially the one who left the parting gift as he went off to uni!
Brilliant! Tried the plunger and failed, tried Google and found this post. Tried the mop head system and – hey presto!! Thank you very much.
Absolutely amazing cleared blockage on 2nd plunge –still cant believe it —thank you so much
worked on the 2nd try, after much panicking beforehand that we be without a toliet and using hot water and bleach before using this method. thanks to this webpage we got the clog free.
My husband had tried a few methods then bought Caustic Soda and couldn’t open the container. I said leave it to me and I’ll try the mop and plastic bag. He was surprised when I flushed the unblocked toilet and then commented “well it was you who blocked it”. Some men just don’t like the Mrs showing how easy it was. Thanks for this.
We’re pleased it worked for you in the end.
A big thumbs up. Well done and thanks for the extra advice.
Blocked toilet, no plunger , no mop, so having looked at your instructions I devised something similar. Old broom handle, strong plastic bag, some old bits of cloth, stuffed cloth in bag , inserted broom handle then tied with plastic tie. Plunged 2 or 3 times and hey presto blockage gone. Many thanks, saved me £100 in call out for an emergency plumber
The mop & bag worked a treat! OMG, it actually worked! Used packing tape to secure the bag to the mop, blockage gone in about 5 pumps of the makeshift plunger. Genius idea. Thank you, saved me loads on a potential plumber call-out just as we are about to move home!
Glad you have managed to rectify the situation before your move.
Well done! Another happy reader :)
Absolutely amazing. I taped the bag on but I’d taped it to the mop pole so it didn’t work so I got a stronger bag only taped around the bag this time. Worked like a dream and saved myself £80. Thank you so much for posting this.
Tryed everything then seen this 2 pushes with the mop and bag was all done amazing idear x
After trying everything with a blocked toilet and pipe I came across this site and it really does work literally was unblock after five pumps thankyou
Didn’t have a mop. Put an old towel in a bag and it worked.
Glad to hear it worked through a little bit of innovative thinking!
As someone who lives on their own, the thought of getting a plumber in to clear ‘the blockage’ that had resisted all other efforts, was a bit embarrassing! So when I Googled ‘How to unblock your toilet’ and found the tip of mob and plastic bag it was a God send. I had to use the handle of a broom and the dog’s old towel in a bag trick, but it worked a treat- THANK YOU.
Great! We’re gald you managed to sort it – and without having to spend a penny!
I had been trying all day with all sorts of recommend solutions, nothing worked. I was about to give up, but gave the internet 1 last try. Hey presto. I found this site. It took about 10 seconds and it was done. Thank you so much.
Worked first time amazing and simple thank you very much.
We’re glad it worked!
Thank you for a great tip. Just did it now. Have no mop or plunger. Just tied a strong carrier bag on arm and pushed it several times down loo as far as it would g. It’s worked a treat. Thanks again
My toilet was blocked for 2 days i couldnt sleep i was very stressed i tried everythng nothing worked its 4am i thought lets google for the last try then i hv to call the plumber then i read ur advice i quickly tried ur method and in 10 sec it was all clear you r amazing i felt god so close to me Thank you sooo much ????
Just did this…fantastic!!!! Toilet I unblocked….panic over we can now all enjoy our morning ritual haha :) thanks for the advice just saved me about £120 ??
You’re welcome. It’s great that we can save people money!
It worked so quickly. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much for this tip, going to forward to all my friends as you saved my purse and pride in seconds.
@Smug – and the pride comes before the purse :) Yes great it worked a treat for me too.
Spent days without a toilet tried numerous things spent a fortune came across this did n’t hold out much hope, Truly amazing, all the nastiness gone in seconds. flushed , flushed and again and no more blockages. This is worth passing on Still can’t believe it this morning Thank you Saved me a new toilet !!!
This bag-on-a-mop technique worked a treat on our blocked toilet (the water was rising scarily high) and it’s FREE!! Glad I didn’t panic and phone the plumber.
We had a terribly choked toilet this morning. The water level wouldn’t go down after initial flush and stayed up after 4 hours!! Tried the plunger and some declogging liquid but nothing worked. Chanced upon this article. Got a mop and a black trash bag, scooped the yucky water out of the pan and within 1 min of plunging the mop with bag in, it cleared!!! I laughed with relief!! Thank you!!!
After trying lots of methods and buying a Plumbers Plunger, when the normal plunger didn’t work I was going to the shops tomorrow to buy some caustic soda tmrw before I called the plumber which costs a bomb in Sydney. I must say that I was shocked with your method worked, I tried for about a minute and it cleared!!! The only thing that did help from the methods I tried is that I now have a toilet full of bubbles that’s to the dishwashing liquid from my previous attempts! I am so glad that I found this page and it was the comments here that made me decide to try it! THANKS a million :)
We are very glad this method can be utilised across the other side of the world. Shame about the bubbles, I hope they subside enough for you to be able to use your loo again!
This worked I am so happy. I had already contacted a plumber and thought I would give it a try and to my amazement it worked first time. Thanks for a great tip it probably saved me a fortune.
We cannot fault this method of unblocking the toilet. There have been a couple of times when we have had a problem. It really works thank you for the advice it has saved us the expense of a plumber.
Hopefully next time (if there is one) you won’t have to spend days without a loo. Glad it worked.
It works! We tried two bottles of highly corrosive acid which did nothing. We were going to call out a plumber tomorrow but I thought I’d try your method. It took a few plunges and then there was a gurgle and it cleared! Won’t waste money again in the chemicals. Thank you for the top tip!
It worked!!!! I’ve tried a bottle of caustic soda, the hot water trick, soap, the plunger all without luck two really good plunger with the mop a pop and it’s fixed as easy as that!! Wish I’d tried this in the first place to save the hours of trying other thing!!
Amazing! Has started to panic as couldn’t unblock with anything else and this worked on the second shot! Thank you ??
Amazing !! Thank you so much I was at my wits end just about to get a plumber out then came across your article. It took 2 minutes and cleared straight away so pleased, have 3 adults and 2 kids (little perpetrators I think) in my house so needless to say they think I am so clever ?? .. thank you ??
We’re really glad it worked for you!
Had a blocked toilet for 2 days couldn’t unblock it even with a plunger designed for the job Came across your solution, mop and plastic bag! 3 plunges hey presto! just like magic it cleared. What a great trick. Thanks
I am really impressed with this easy method of unblocking a toilet. Mine was blocked for 2 days and I tried unblocking gel, soda crystals and hot water method, but the cheapest option worked the best! Thankyou diybasics!
I would just like to say thank you so much for this. I had a comedy situation this morning. I had a very bad stomach and the toilet blocked up. Was panicking somewhat and read this. I had tried a closehanger and that didn’t happen and I didn’t have a mop. I got a sturdy carrier bag and wrapped it around my hand and then performed the plumbing action and it worked first time. Life savers!
The simple options are sometimes the best ones. We’re pleased it has worked for you.
Well done and we hope you are feeling better now too!
What a brilliant, yet simple, idea, worked perfectly after a few plunges.
Lifesaver ! Starting to panic and knew I’d never sleep with a blocked toilet … and I didn’t wanna call a plumber as I work for my landlord so would have undoubtably seen them again. I tried this when I should have been trying to sleep.. and it worked in less than a min. Amazing. Thank you so much!
Glad it worked and allowed you to get your good night’s sleep after all.
Amazeballs! It worked in less than a minute. Unblocked no problem!
My hero. Saved the day ! Should have tried this first …
We’re glad it worked – happy flushing.
I was staying with a friend and the guest bathroom loo became blocked. I was so embarrassed! After trying chemical unblockers and hot water I used this method and managed to clear it (30 mins before we were due to fly home!). It did take about 10 mins of plunging so please do keep trying if at first it doesn’t work. Thank you for saving the embarrassment of leaving our friends with a blocked loo and plumbing bill!
Well done – we’re happy you got the result you needed and I imagine you were very relieved.
Brilliant! Just used this method, worked a treat. Thought I’d try it before calling a plumber, you’ve just saved me the expense and hassle. Thanks for the top tip!
Was up half of the night trying to unblock the toilet. All the methods that usually worked failed ( Plunger, hot water). Tried again next morning then decided would have to try a chemical unblocker from the supermarket. Then thought why not try this – sounds unlikely but other people say it worked. 2 goes and my toilet is clear. How can I be so happy over a functioning toilet – THANK YOU !
The simple methods are quite often the best. We’re glad you’re up and flushing again!
Fantastic tip for unblocking toilet! Second time we have had a blocked Waste pipe – blocked about a metre from the toilet in the wide soil pipe where two bathrooms exit through the first floor wall. Had the same blockage a couple of months ago and cleared in a very unpleasant way which I would not want to do again – ever. This time at the first sign of trouble plunged like crazy and in two flushes everything is running freely again. The pipe is completely clear. First time I’ve commented on anything on line but just so pleased. Make sure you try this before resorting to chemicals or plumbers.
A big thumbs up to you. Let’s hope the blockage has been cleared for good this time.
Wow. This worked for me in the first instance!! I was bit worried it would splash all over me but no, the in the bowl went quickly and flushed well too. Few after trying so many different things. Thank you so very much.
It works! Such a relief to have the toilet cleared and back to normal – and no plumber’s bill! Thanks for such a straightforward and valuable tip
Thank you, Thank you. Was trying to fix this before my husband came home – how embarrassing would that be? Used an Asda 10p bag for life & secured it with loads of sellotape. Bingo on the second go…..and used rubber gloves to cut the bag off and didn’t need to throw the mop away. Thanks again from one very relieved lady.
Phew, close call. Glad you managed to sort it out.
Thank you, it worked, so easy, toilet had been blocked for 2 days, not very pleasant, 2 firm plunges and it cleared, was dreading having to call plumber. Thank you again
Wow. People saying they were laughing at how well it worked are right. Two goes and I couldn’t believe my eyes as the blockage disappeared. Thank you!!!
brilliant unblocked in seconds …. thankyou
I read about the mop and bag and laughed but after all day trying with a wire coat hanger etc I tried the mop. Hey presto 2 mins later the loo completely unblocked! The mop was out for the bin men but now safely put away in the tool cupboard. Thank you!
Then your old mop wasn’t as useless as you thought. Result!
BOOM, my boy put a whole loo roll down, cardboard in all and flushed several times flooding the bathroom and the loo roll disappeared, Mop and bag trick done in less than a minute, upstairs toilet back in action.
Didn’t have mop so cut up my son’s old T-shirt tied it to a bottom of broom pole then gaffer taped a Sainsbury’s bag for life to end after removing air. Gave it a plunge then another, third time lucky.. Sceptical hubby looked on then cheered when the sludgy water disappeared. Yes it works! Smiles all round. Thank you so much.
Thanks so much mop and bag tied to it worked toilet unblocked awesome going to put it on Facebook
This certainly did the trick. Mop plus a Next carrier bag secured with string-didn’t have any cable ties. 3rd plunge and blockage sorted. A great solution. Many thanks
Great, we’re pleased it worked for you and thanks for the FB share.
Had blocked toilet for weeks did the usual, plunger rofs etc just used mop and bag and woop woop unblocked loo .wish I knew this trick weeks ago. Thanks so much .
I was desperate after trying chemical products and hot water, then I tried this (albeit sceptically) and WOW !!! Fantastic !!!
It works!!!I’ve spent a fortune on unblocking the toilet and had a lot disgusting sessions trying to clear it. Your trick worked in about 20 seconds flat.I couldn’t believe itThank you Thank you Thank you
We’re really pleased this has worked for you and hopefully will continue to, should you have the problem again.
Worked for me too. Not having a shopping bag I ended up just using a large-ish freezer bag and did by hand without stick. There weren’t any turds, it was just clean water. Thanks guys. My headstrong Italian wife was demanding the use of strong chemicals.
What a great tip. I thought this wouldn’t work but it does. The toilet was blocked for days and I was buying all sort of things to get it unblocked. I’d just about admitted defeat and was looking online for a plumber when I saw this tip. Thank you for this tip guys I couldn’t believe it would work.
What an ingenious mind? You have just saved me 65 pounds. I tried it, and it worked on my first attempt. All I can say is to wish you more grease to your elbows. Thank you.
We’re just sorry you had to spend out on chemicals to unblock your loo when you could have done this for free!
Thank you, tried the rod and hot water didn’t work. Well worth paying 5p for emergency carrier bags this did the job straight away.
It worked!!! It blooming well worked! I’m alone, disabled and had accidentally flushed a fish tank ornament out with the dirty tank water! I spent ages with buckets of water, wire coat hangers, you name it! Thank you so much, I’ll be telling everyone I know in cyberspace!
Well 5p is not a bad plumbing bill. We’re just happy it cost you so little!
We are very glad this has worked for you. I do hope you managed to retrieve the ornament as this could cause you other problems down the line.
Thank you. I can’t believe this worked, I had literally tried everything and even as I was doing it I didn’t think it would work!! Thank you!!
Mop and carrier bag to unblock a toilet? Tried it and it worked in less than 2minutes.
OMG! I just tried this a few minutes ago and It ACTUALLY worked. The water is back at the correct level again. Cannot believe something so simple did the job. THANKS!!
I have been trying to unblock my toilet for a few days and thanks to this advice I succeeded a few minutes ago. It ACTUALLY worked !!!!
OMG IT really does work just tried, it work straight away. What a fantastic and cheap way to unblock the loo.
Thank you so much for this advice. It worked instantly and saved me the cost of calling out a plumber. So greatful.
If it blocks again in the future at least you now know you won’t have to wait days to get a result!
OMG!!!! My daughter put too much loo roll down the pan and blocked it. After much arguing haha, had to try and sort it and water was coming right to the top, just googled how to sort this without calling a plumber and came across this. Thought it was rubbish but gave it a go and omg it worked in under 1 minute what a fantastic idea thankyou so much
My toilet and shower are are connected, and I live on the fifth floor of an apartment block. I often have this problem of the toilet blocking and unmentionable mess coming up in the shower. I have just asked someone to block the shower outlet with a plunger and then plunged the toilet with your method. I’ve seen it done without the bag, so this is a real saving of the mop. I’m going to see whether I’ve done it successfully. Thank you very much.
Glad it worked for you and hopefully our daughter now knows by demonstration what happens if we put too much loo roll down the pan!
That’s the last thing you need, mess coming up into your shower, it sounds awful. We are pleased it has worked.
I tried it and four or five plunges and it worked a treat! Thank you!
Will the mop and bag work if there is something solid stuck down there – my blockage may be a toilet cleaner holder that usually sits on the inside of the toilet pan. It won’t wedge it further down?
It is not a good idea to use the mop and bag method for this as you don’t want to force it down the pipe. This will cause massive problems further down the line. You really need to retrieve the object. You may need to call a plumber to do this.
It works – can’t believe it!!! One thing after another going wrong. Toilet blocking just the final straw – tried everything to unblock. Googling for someone to come and fix it when I found this – 10 mins later mop and carrier bag – toilet unblocked thank you so much whoever you are x
I have just tried it and yes it really works thanks for the advice a nice cheap and quick way to unblock your loo so give it ago
We are just glad we were able to save you some money!
My partner said you are a genius been up for 3 hours with a flooded kitchen and bathroom at 3am until I checked Google! Amazing! And thankyou for this tip
We’re glad it worked for you and we hope you managed to catch up on your sleep afterwards!
Putting this ‘tool’ together saying “this is never going to work” then immediately eating my words within seconds of trying it out. Absolutely amazed. Thank you for sharing this brilliant tip!
This is amazing having tried plunger, drain unblocked, toilet auger and now this. After about 10 plunges it WORKED!!! Amazing and so simple. Thank you
Oh my god . It worked. So shocked and thrilled. Thank you so much.
YES!! It DOES work. Didn’t have a mop, but a long pole with several carrier bags wrapped around the end, including the strong one for the outside layer, and with a few plunges, all was sorted. THANK YOU.
Great it worked for you and made the unbelievable, believable!
After having tried different methods to unclog my toilet, I came across your website and in less than a minute I was a happy woman…. I feel like a super hero. Thank you so much!!
Omg! It worked I’ve been trying everything then tried the mop and bag did it straight away thank you! Well ??
Oh my goodness !! Absolutely gob smacked! I have 4 girls ! Say no more! Cannot believe this worked, have tried just about everything else! Literally heard it unblocking! Thank you so much ??
Thank you so much! It worked immediately! I came home from a long exhausting day at work to the excited glee of my 5yr old telling me how the toilet fills up when he flushes it. Of course i couldn’t believe my ears but alas it was true. I was helplessly searching for where to get a plunger at this time of the day and came across this site. Told myself i have nothing to lose…. Just one try and it became unblocked. I am so relieved and grateful. Thanks!
Thanks so much for this great advice. It worked straight away and I’m so relieved i didn’t need to call a plumber. I’m a single parent and hate when things go wrong as I’m not very practical at DIY but this was just so simple, not even necessary to buy a plunger or any tools. Fantastic simple advice.
I can’t thank you enough, this worked perfectly for me! I was about to give up and call the plumber but 6 hard plunges of the mop and 2x plastic bag combo unblocked my toilet straight away. I’m so happy!!!
I couldn’t believe how fast and how well, the plastic bag and mopped cleared the toilet as it was not a pretty sight. THANKS for the help.
Worked a treat after my nasty Team Leader Jamie blocked the toilet!
OMG THIS WORKS!!! Thank you so much for this…. couldn’t believe it worked first go… Phew!!
Glad that it has worked for you – it really is such a relief when you know you don’t have to ring a plumber!
This works! Yes! Yes! Yes!….. Had almost dismissed it, having tried so many weird things last two days. Was at my wits end! But gave it a last try…! Didnt work initially. But after several strokes….whew! It opened with a pop! Unbelievable. Thanks so much.
Was sceptical, but after hours of waiting this cleared the loo in less than a minute! Excellent!
Wow! Failed miserably with the first couple of attempts but, having marginally altered my technique, it worked like a dream. Have put up with this issue for three weeks and now I’m wondering why. Thank you!
My wife wanted to use a drain cleaner but I said I would try your method. It worked like a charm although it took me about 6 plunges to work but when it did it was such a good feeling. Absolutely brilliant and saved me £75 as that’s what my central heating and plumbing insurers would have charged. Really great, thank you.
Had my doubts but this actually works!! Make sure your mop doesn’t have a detachable head other wise it gets really tricky and you have to re attach which can get gross!!
Fantastic tip – just tried it and it worked perfectly. Took several goes but such a cheap and practical solution to a common problem – many thanks!
Amazing! Like a lot of people here I was somewhat sceptical… but about 10 hard plunges with the mop/bag later, the clogged water suddenly drained out of the toilet. Thanks!!
Spent ages trying to unblock the toilet to the point of giving up. Just happened to stumble across this mop n bag method here. Was not very hopeful of it working, but hey presto it worked a treat. Many many thanks for this tip.
Thank you. Another convert to the mop and bag method. Nothing else had worked but a dozen or so hefty plunges with the bagged up mop and an almighty blockage cleared with a satisfying gurgle.
After three days of a blocked loo, thanks to a teenage son, we tried the mop and bag trick – result ! All flowing freely again now.
OMG!!!.. just read this tip so I went and tried it.. worked on my third attempt!!!! I have tried all day with cleaners, wire, coathangers and rubber gloves!!! ????????????????
Yep – it worked! Amazing! Just imagine how much money it’s saved us!
You are a genius, Unblocked the toilet with the Mop/plastic bag method. 3 people had tried other methods without out success. My turn and it worked perfectly i was hero of the day. Many, Many Thanks, ‘Top Banana’ Best Wishes Simon
@fujii – yes, at ridiculous £ per hour charges I am so glad I didn’t have to get a plumber either – especially as I’ve just had to pay for a holiday!
Worked first time, duh simples??????????
Tried just about everything, then tried the ‘mop in the bag’ trick – best toiler unblocker ever!!! Worked straight away. Plumber was trying to charge me an arm and a leg. Thanks a lot.
AMAZING tried everything else then this simple trick worked straight away. Only wish I had read this earlier
Read it tried it worked first time wish a read ot earlier ??
Thank you so much for the mop and bag tip; it worked! I was able to unblock a toilet that had been blocked for two days within seconds!
Awesome, worked easy using the plunger… Thanks!
Mop n plastic bag worked great, so glad we found this tip.
My toilet has been blocked several times. I used a strong hose to push round the bend, this took time & was messy. After reading your advise I decided to use the MOP method. One minute & blockage cleared, no mess, easy to do. Which I had read this before. Thanks
At least you got there in the end and you will hopefully remember this method in the future. Happy it worked.
I cannot believe this worked first time. I was about to call a plumber in France which would have cost a lot. I literally poured hot water in then plunged it with a mop. Voila ??????
Worked first time. Supermarket carrier bags work just fine.
Sorry, but did not work for me at friend’s house Many attempts, may have another try tomorrow unless they have called a plumber.
@Ted – it worked for me. Your friend must have a bigger problem than a pipe blockage which may well need a plumber.
Totally brilliant. I get a blocked or back logged toilet every time it rains for a extended period of time. (Old council building. Bottom flat in block of four. Bottom of a hill.) This method worked after the first couple plunges. It was amazing! Thank you so much.
Amazing! It worked first time! And my mop is uncontaminated. Love it!
Shame the council can’t long term sort your drains out for you though :(
Thank you so much! We’ve been struggling for 2 hours with plungers, rubber gloves, wires and were on the brink of calling a (expensive) man out. But this worked!
Fantastic this really does work, so much so it now flushes better than it did before the blockage, thank you
So I was searching for somewhere that might sell a plunger on a Sunday…. and came across this site as an alternative… Took me longer to get the bag on the mop than it did to unblock the toilet… Thank you so much for this!
We’re glad it has helped and it sounds like it may have sorted out a longer term problem. Long may it continue to flush!
The mop trick worked to clear what I think is the worst of the blockage (a huge clump of loo paper) but it’s still not completely unblocked. Should I keep trying the mop trick, or is it time for a plumber?
Worked on second attempt. Saved me a fortune on a plumber. Thank you!
@Kezza – try it a few times – even when the loo is not blocked (as it might help clear any further blockage down the line). But if the problem persists and the blockage is way further down the drain or even outside, then you’ll need a plumber. Fingers crossed for you.
You’re welcome, we are glad it worked for you.
Omg actually spent 2/3 hours trying everything that I had googled and nothing worked ??With a lot of mess my stress levels were rising like the loo read your method and thought well it must be worth a try what have I got to loose other than a mop and boom a few plunge like actions with the mop and carrier and it every contents in the toilet flushed away thank you so much ??
Mop and plastic bag worked 1st time after trying everything else Brilliant Thank you
We’re pleased this worked for you and hope your stress levels have now subsided too.
I had a blocked toilet, I thought I may need a plumber…then I saw this, and decided to try So easy, cleared straight away after a couple of plunges! Brilliant and simple, thank you!!
Brilliant! After a struggle with the usual cleaners and even ultrasound, it worked in seconds. Can hardly wait for the next blockage! Many thanks!
This mop and bag trick worked a treat! Toilet was constantly filling up almost to the rim and with some hot water and dishwashing liquid, the mop and bag, couple of plunges later…. cleared the clogged.
I find this great tool for toilet blockages. Just Google it its called Toiletsaber.
Took minutes…if you can, flush your loo and then go in with the mop whilst you have excess water in the bowl – that’s what worked for me. Thank you so much! x
Wow tried this on a whim and it worked…really it works!
I am a bit of a cynic about internet ‘this is simple and brilliant’ stories, but in this case, it is true. I used the plastic mop head from my drain rod set. I covered the mop head with two plastic bags, making sure that they were tied tightly with the bag handles. Then I used the plastic head as the plunger. Flushing the toilet cistern while gentle plunging was beneficial. A few flush and plunge sessions and the blockage was cleared. So, I would record this as good sensible advice. The blockage that I cleared was a partial blockage, but I do not see why it might not be able to cope with a complete block. Gentle but firm pressure is best, rather than over-vigorous action that will just splash dirty water around.
It worked! Toilet was well and truly blocked and I had tried everything, bleach, hot, water, washing up liquid, a wire coat hanger, my hand down the u-bend. Had even had to remove dirty toilet water into a bin cos it wouldn’t drain atall. Try the mop and bag and within 5 seconds it was cleared. Thank you, I was out of ideas and getting desperate.
We’re glad it worked for you. It’s a shame you had to go through the other unfortunate trials before trying it.
Mop and bag method worked like magic ! Many thanks.
Thank you so much, I tried everything to unblock my toilet and after to tries it worked a treat.
Amazing can’t believe it worked so fast! Many thanks
Omg it worked!!! Tried one shot hot water plunger over two day to no avail. Read this got me mop placed a back bin bag over it two flushed and about ten plunges and BOOM! All gone!
We’re glad this helped sort your problem quickly and efficiently.
Yay! Brilliant advice, my loo is up and running again.
absolutely fantastic it took me 2 seconds to unblock my toilet
Unreal worked first time and I had tried washing up liquid, pat hanger, drain unblocker liquid. About 5 pumps with a mop ow was done .
Amazing! I was sceptical when I came across this and tried everything else first: plunger, auger, drain unblocker, washing up liquid. None of them worked but a few minutes persistence using this technique unblocked my toilet and saved me a fortune in plumber charges. Thanks!
Work first time, I’m so chuffed I didn’t need to call a plumber, cheers
Omg just spent over an hour.with coathangers (3) max drain unblocked, kicking the toilet and generally swearing a lot. One mild plunge with the mop in a bag and gone. You sir work miracles!
Fabulous. One obviously happy man!
Worked immediately on first plunge. Thank you so much. Used black bin bag with some garden metal twine. Easy peasy.
Brilliant ,worked straight away, saved a lot of extra yuk Thank you !!
We are always happy to hear this method has worked and always pleased when it has saved our readers from having to deal with any mess.
Found this while looking online for a plumber. Used a carrier bag with 2 old tea towels inside. Worked second try. Genius! Thank you so much!
We’re glad we were able to save you from having to part with any money at this expensive time of year.
Omg. Did not think this would work but have just unblocked my toilet . And I had been up to my armpits trying to unblock it for ages! Just before entire family coming to stay for Xmas. Cannot thank you enough for your advice….. and I never write on the internet !
Hi tried and my toilet was unblocked in minutes. First time I have had to do this and it certainly worked. Thanks for the tip.
Went on face book last nite toilet blocked said I will give this a go with mop and plastic bag couldn’t see how it would work but OMG did it worked a dream great tip no smell any more thank you so much. . Patricia .
You’re welcome – we are pleased it worked for you.
Bin liner and mop worked worked amazing didn’t think it would but it saved me a call out for a plumber cheers
Wow worked like a charm thank you who ever thought of this past 2 days I was stressed out.
Just unblocked my toilet using a mop and plastic bag. Couldn’t belive it. Marvelous. The best tip I have heard for a long time.
We’re glad ou are now de-stressed and it saved you calling out a plumber.
We have a recurring problem with our upstairs toilet blocking and I have had the pleasure of unblocking it by hand more times than I care to remember. This evening after two doses of evil smelling one shot and no success I tried this. Fantastic!!! Never thought it would work but it’s great. THANKS!!
Hopefully, you now have the formula to unblock it every time, or until such time you wish to get a plumber to sort your issue out for good.
Absolute amazing so happy really couldn’t thank enough
Thought we had tried everything . On verge of calling a plumber then tried this. Result! Thank you so much
Fabulous. We are glad it worked for you and saved you some expense.
Thank you. A badly blocked toilet, up enough to reach within 3 cm of raised toilet seat! Some serious baling out, a flush to give me some water to work with, a few good pumps with the mob and carrier bag and whey hey, no blockage. There was no way we could afford a plumber, so I cannot say thank you enough. As an after thought, there is an excellent need for strong carrier bags and obviously everyone here has discovered it!
wow!! Thanks so much on this bolt experience. We were scare to touch the waste and it smell all over the house, worst of it all the toilet block on Sunday. No plumber work on Sunday here. so i had to ask Chere (My wife) please go ask the neighbor if they have toilet unblocked tool, it was 10 pm the neighbor has already slept and Gift my madam secretary was badly pressed she took iron and start push the waste, but unable to go through. It come a time were everybody was pressed including me. So i took my laptop went online to search on toilet block and i find this helpful experience. OMG. it work with a blink of an eye, i ran out and call my wife check it out dear she was scare thinking i have it all over my hands but the truth is my hands was clean. she look in It work it work it was so helpful now everyone has to go in there and do the thin……. she said. Thanks Thanks Thanks.
Fabulous, were are glad it worked for you. It shows you that searching the internet can be very helpful sometimes.
I have unblocked the toilet on several occasions using a strong thick piece of plastic tubing or a thin plumbers wire. On this occasion I failed. I was about to give in and phone a plumber when I decided to attempt the mop and poly bag solution. I did not expect success as I suspect the blockage was too far away. After about a minute of plunging the blockage cleared. Really pleased. Thanks.
amazing piece of information on blocked toilet i tried everything be for all failed till i came across your site through google that mop and a plastic bag did it 2 pumps away it went and i was looking at a few hundred quid to get that sorted as for the plastic bag i used a large zip up freezer bag locked it on handle thank you so much
We’re happy it allowed you to save your money to spend on something more rewarding than a blocked loo.
Omg after using hot water washing up liquid special soda from hardware shop loo was still blocked so tried the mop and bag this morning Two pushes and heard the blockage pop and water went down Toilet cleared thank you
So I was in the verge of suicide over my blocked toilet like no other (the kids have had to pee in the bath) and a friend suggested this method. Then I googled and found this and thought ‘whatever’ won’t work for me. Anyway, no less than 75 aggressive plunges later it’s clear. I could cry with relief almost as if it was my own personal blockage that had been cleared! If you get my meaning! ??
Just used a toilet brush and plastic bag. Took only six pumps to shift!
Thanks, had a blocked toilet for 2 days, near flushing over the sides, tried various old tricks and stuff from the shop, but nothing worked. Just tried this and hey presto, unblocked, cheers!
We’re glad it helped. Two days of a blocked loo mustn’t have been a pleasant experience.
Thank you so much. This was my last resort – the next time it will be my first try. Work a treat and very quickly. Happiness is a free flowing WC!
I am a cleaner in a mens warehouse, and the toilets are always disgusting. I have 3 toilets blocked at the moment and have used 5 toilet brushes, which wasn’t a good idea, what with only having disposable hand gloves, it wasn’t enough to cover my arms from the splash back…. Needless to say the length of a mop handle sounds like a great idea, I’m going to try out the mop and carrier bag tomorrow, thanks for the tip, I think I might need quite a few bags !!
I managed to unblock 3 toilets at work using this tip, it’s brilliant and so simple. I used a big Tesco carrier bag and just held onto the handles around the mop, I gave it a few pushes and it flushed away, then I just dropped the bag into the bin, and best of all NO SPLASH BACK… I usually have at least one toilet blocked every week, and I certainly won’t be going back to using a loo brush, great idea THANKS.
We are glad this has managed to solve your ongoing blockage problem to minimal effect!
worked a treat, used a blue Gap bag with string drawstring, and in hindsight I should have turned it inside out, as I now have a blue stain on the toilet bowl! Otherwise, I was very impressed!
Thank you so very very much. It actually works. Yes I did use a red bag and have a lovely red colour at base, but a bit of bleach and this will gol. Im so grateful . Just been waiting for a delayed plunger to be delivered and you have solved it. Thanks
Unless the blocked area is near to the front, then it does not work at all.
@Dazza – yeh it’s not for the drains further down the line. But this article is just for blocked toilets not blocked drains.
Spent the whole day trying to unblock the toilet with hot water, soap, bleach with no success. Was about to all emergency plumber and decided to give this method a try. Woooo success after second plunge. Thank you so so much just saved me a fortune ??
Would never have believed it worked so fast 2or3 plungers and it was clear ,no mess at all mop still in good condition thank you very much”your Clive ( Maderos123)
Thank you so much for your unblocking idea its brilliant have tried for days to clear it good old mop and bag
Blimey. It worked. Threw several gallons of hot water down the loo afterwards and the whole thing is fine, and clean as a whistle. Thank you so much for the tip.
ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT and so so simple, like magic. I keep looking down the loo to make sure IT has all gone, can’t believe it. Thank you.
Hi desperate for help! Sept.weekend 2018 had to get emergency plumber to unblock toilet said he couldn’t find the source of the problem but removed toilet paper only at a cost of £180! 3 weeks ago had another company out they used camera ect couldn’t find a problem except for air pockets? however this weekend 25th Nov blockage again & the smell is unbearable!! who do I contact now? can anyone point me in the direction of finding a solution?
I was going out my mind after my gorgeous little nephew blocked my toilet with the loo roll. Tried this and worked first time. Thanks Headache gone
The best thing I’ve used is a 2ltr empty plastic pop bottle leave the cap on and cut across the bottom of the bottle to take this part away then rubber glove up put the bottle in the toilet bowl get someone to flush the loo and hold the bottle with two hands around the top of the bottle and push down and up like crazy to suck the water into the bottle to create a vacuum into the bowl and it works like a plunger you may need to do two or three times but it sure does work.make sure you put the bottle into a bag after to stop drips etc.
Been trying on and off to clear a partial blockage in our downstairs loo, without success! THE MOP AND BAG plus plenty of water 5 minutes, hooray.
So my toilet was blocked with GOD ONLY KNOWS and had been playing up for a couple of weeks… i tried this and within about 10 secs of “plunging” i risked lifting it up and VOILA! Water had gone. This trick is AMAZING and i will tell everyone i know
Spent days trying to unblock my toilet. I have 2 men so you can guess that the load my toilet takes is more than usual! I was at my wits end when I found this method! Instantly unlocked and no mess or having to get my hands near the state of the toilet!! Amazing!
Amazing this really does work Thank you
Thank you!! I had stuck on rubber gloves and couldn’t find the blockage. Then I tried this trick and it worked in seconds!
Thank you so much! Had a blocked toilet, tried the chemicals, baking soda and vinegar, the coat hanger trick, anything you can without the tools like a snake or plunger. Ready to call the plumber and i stumble across this page and the mop technique, first go and it unblocked it! I can’t thank whoever made this website enough!
A big round of applause for this awesome little site!!! Love the images too!! Yep this defo truely does work! I just came across this site randomly, but tried this method a while back now (minus the bag and partly in frustration!) and it worked a treat – The only prob was that the end of the Vieleda mop detatched and got sucked down the toilet when it unblocked the offending blockage!! :O Only £3.50 for a new one in Tesco, so pretty minor. The toilet blocked again recently and I thought I would invest in a plunger, but it is useless in comparison. I selotaped the head on this time before giving the mop another whirl and it unblocked it without the head coming offthis time. Didn’t think to use a plastic bag as suggested here, but that would work just as well and potentially keep the mop a bit less contaminated!!!! Happly blockage free flushing everyone!!
absolutely fabulous many thanks for a great plumbing tip. this gives me a story to tell in the pub later.
wow spent hours trying everything then tried this worked within seconds thank you so much
Thanks you, thank you, thank you. Just spent all morning trying different methods of clearing a blockage. No joy. Found this page, one push of the mop and all is good. Cannot thank you enough for saving me the drama and cost of calling a plumber.
After 2 days of having a completely blocked and unusable toilet and as a last ditch attempt after trying literally EVERYTHING to unblock it, I thought I would have a go at this before calling out a plumber. Didn’t for one minute think it would work to be honest but worth a try if it meant saving 100 quid. It worked after the first attempt! I have never been so happy! Thank you to whoever published this you absolute gem!!!!
Great tip as good as the one about ironing out watermarks on tables it worked first time after 2 hours of messing about with all the usual
amazing !! had struggled to get it clear, nasty blockage nearly up to the rim tried your method hey presto !!
Im so glad i read how to unblock toilet cant believe it actually work im.so greatful. THANK YOU so much. Anita. 19-9-19 14.21pm
So glad I found this site. Like everyone else we’d tried everything and were on the verge of calling the emergency plumbers. Mop in a bag for the win!!
HAH! Toilet had been locked for a few days and after trying the plunger, a bucket of water, and even having gone to the shop to get one of these springy wires, I was already phoning plumbers to get my toilet jetted. And then I just thought I’d try this… it worked!!! Amazing!
I was going to go buy some drain rods as a normal plunger wasn’t doing anything apart from making a mess, I saw this and tried it and it worked like a charm.
Honestly I was sceptical trying this, but I swear to god it worked first try. Absolute lifesaver as we only have one bathroom in the house! By far the quickest and easiest way, it’s really worth a try :)
Excellent solution. Worked in less than a minute. Bog roll bag attached to a plunger with insulation tape. Thanks.
I found this post and just happen to trouble on the weekend with dam blocked toilet. Used some chemical kinds of stuff didn’t work and tried this still did not worked. Wow a very easy and simple trick – worked for me – that people don’t even consider. 2/3 buckets of water at 30cm high bumm job done. Booked the plumber and cancelled again
I have a really sophisticated electric toilet. This technique was amazing and worked with the second ‘plunge’. Well done whoever thought of this!
I have an all singing, all dancing electric toilet that had become blocked. With only the second plunge using this method the toilet resumed normal service. Amazing!
Can’t believe it actually worked, toilets been blocked for 2 days and this worked first time sooooo happy
It didn’t work for me ?? Got stuck in the pan and by the time I managed to pull it back out the bag was in shreds and the mop head had come adrift from the handle ??
Oh wow! So glad I came across this site ?? THIS ACTUALLY WORKS..I tried everything all day so I wasn’t very convinced before I tried it..Thank you ??
No mop but a thick plastic bag containing wads of toilet paper and a flexible toilet brush did the trick. The toilet brush provides the handle and structure. The toilet paper INSIDE the bag provides the vacuum seal bulk. The bag keeps the whole thing together. Gotta shove it pretty far in and work that suction/pressure wave. Thanks for a great idea.
I live in Vietnam which might not seem relevent except it is well known not to flush toilet paper (my wife blocked the toilet by doing so and I have spent the last three days using every conventional method known to man to unblock it). Being fairly handy DIY wise I was loathe to call out a plumber on fear of him taking the piss out of “Mr Idiot White Guy”. I tried this using carrier bags toilet roll and a length of left over cable trunking. It has been between 98 and 102 degrees here this week so tempers were becoming frayed. Whoever posted this, I salute you sir for saving my en-suite (and possibly my marriage) as we say here Cam On (thank you)’
I don’t know how to thank. My toilet has been blocked since yesterday – Christmas day but some how we managed to get by. But after the night & this afternoon, it was becoming dire. No DIY shop to buy plunger. Tried vinegar, bicarbonate, washing liquid and hot water, nothing. Water kept rising and not going down. Son said we need to find an emergency plumber- on boxing day! Thought I’d google” unblocking toilet without… And there you were.. God sent. Mop, plastic bag.. Kids thought I was insane. One thrust and it all went down!! Never been so happy. Thank you so much??
So my toilet has been blocked since Christmas day night. Usually fixes itself with a couple of flushes but no luck. Saw this, and due to trying a few other methods, with no luck, I wasn’t feeling confident this would work either. Big blue argos bag tied around my mop, 1 plunge into the toilet and it fixed it straight away. Brilliant, thank you very much. You have saved me a lot of hassle.
